My Fender Hard Case is coming apart(FIX?)

The foam is separating from the Plastic on the lid portion of the case, what glue would fix/hold/be safe to use to fix? I want to know if there’s any hope before going out and buying a new case I really like this case and it’s around $250 for the same one new

Basic hot glue or rubber/contact cement ought to do it. Whatever adhesive you get, check its fine print first to make sure it's safe to use with polystyrene (the white foam part).

As you can see from the small dabs the factory used, it should be a fairly easy and straightforward fix, then you'll be good to go.

If it is within useable formulation, 3M 90 is pretty useful where I work. We do not have polystyrene though. What has Fender Customer Support said?

I haven’t contacted the support but, the cases come with a 1 year warranty that covers against manufacturing defects but I’m not the original owner/purchaser so I wouldn’t be covered most likely and I don’t know when the bass was originally purchased

Looks like it was originally glued with a few dabs of something like a caulk. Contact cement or rubber cement would likely eat big cavities into the Styrofoam form. I would use construction adhesive "Liquid Nails" or similar without the volatile compounds that can melt the foam.

How about hot glue? I’ve seen a few people online recommend that I think it would be safe on the foam but I could be wrong

Depending on how tight the fit is between the foam and the case, you may want to get a roll of carpet tape. It is sticky on both sides and tends to stick well to a lot of different materials. That said, I’d be reluctant to try it if your case gets prolonged exposure to cold air. In temps below 40~35 F carpet tape will lose its ability to stick to certain plastics.
Speaking of which, no matter which adhesive/tape you use, I’d wipe down the case lid where I was going to apply that adhesive, with some denatured alcohol to ensure there is no residual mold release on it.

Hot glue by nature is going to apply as a bead. Not ideal. Any adhesive needs to be evenly applied. Hence the 3M 90 spray. It won't spray evenly after its first use, but it'll do nicely for the first application. IF IT CAN EXIST W/ POLYSTYRENE. If OK, then the trick is to getting the fabric taught when getting back into place. What a PITA. I hope mine don't go down that road.

Hot glue should work, though I have never used it on anything that I wanted to glue permanently, it peels away from smooth surfaces very easily.

UPDATE just got off the phone with Fender and they said to use Shoe goo, it won’t eat the foam and it bonds nice and good

I was just about to say Shoe Goo... I've used that stuff for all kinds of fixes. (even fixing shoes.) GREAT STUFF!!!... the only thing I use more is JB weld... obviousley for different fixes.

I can't comment on hot glue or other stuff mentioned here.

If you have a caulk gun I'd go with this. I had the same style of case at one time, one side had no foam so I got it cheap. I used the pink insulation type foam covered with black fleece for that side. If you have a caulk gun, for $5 this is the safe bet.

Does that stuff still exist?

Discovered it in the late 80's, and it rapidly became an essential toolkit addition for every skateboarder I knew.

Then, in about 1993, it got banned here in the U.K. for being incredibly carcinogenic.

Never found any product as effective, and am always bemoaning the fact that it's not available anymore.

So you're saying it's not only still available outside the U.K. but is in fact used as a component in products being sold in the U.K.?


....interesting....crazy....and explains why I love the heady smell every time I open my Fender hard shell case.
