I got this Link Removed from Rondo Music a few months ago.
I got it because I wanted to give a fretless bass a go again.. My first attempt at Fretless was a Michael Kelly Dragonfly 5 .. a really sweet acoustic bass.. but I didn't like the way the B sounded acoustically so I figured if I had to plug it in I might as well have an electric... so I traded my Dragonfly and was fretlessless (did I say that..? ) for a while. I saw the Brice as a way to give a fretless bass a go without dropping a lot of coin and that way... if I found that a fretless was not for me... like I found with the 6ers... I would not be out a lot of $$$.
So I get this Brice.. and I find that I really like playing a fretless bass.. so I had a 6er... that I did not do the same thing with.. The logic behind that (the 6) was drop some coin so if I didn't like it I could sell it... and I did just that. I sold my KZ5 (which I still kind of miss) and used the $$ from that with some extra $$$ to get a souped up KZ6. A great bass and I had dealt with the seller here on TB with another bass so I knew I'd be getting a good bass ... but I found that a 6 is just not for me at this point.... I just didn't feel it.. So I traded the 6 for a Cirrus fretless 5 and some cash.. and that was that on my 6er venture....... but I now had two fretless basses. Now the Brice was always a "temporary" thing for me and when I got it, I got it with the idea of modding it.. so I got a [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] pre for it. I figured it wasn't a very pricey pre and I had read some good reviews so what the hey.. Once I got the Cirrus I decided to sell the Brice.. and the pre seperately or together , which ever came first.. but I got no takers so I then decided to do the mod for the experience.
The stock pre was a 4 knob two band pre that was APPP*/V,Bal,T,B with no tone controls in the passive mode like many pres. As you can see I shielded the pup cavities and the electronics cavity.. and the BM pre is a 4 knob 3 band pre that is APPP/V,Bal with stacked Passive tone/Mid,B/T controls.
First off.. I am quite proud of this mod and the fact that it actually went well, and now I have no doubts about modding my KH5... Audere Pre, Hipshot A brass bridge & Ultralights already acquired and pups to be determined (still trying to decide between Nordys and Delanos) with a coil selector switch for the bridge humbucker .
I had this bass in the classifieds but after the mod I decided to pull the add. The bass is a much better bass (not that it was bad before) and I figure if I can get some decent 16mm spaced pups to replace the stock ones eventually (I am in no hurry) I will have a totally different bass. The preamp and shielding alone did wonders. The bass is a lot less noisy and tonally it is not the same bass. I have much more in the way of tonal options than I did in the stock pre. This was a very good experience for me which I thought I'd share.. It was nowhere near as difficult as I thought it would be and I don't think I will ever pay someone to do something like this after this experience. I just took my time and did some research.
