Update- As of now, there is no bass. Someone bought it out from under me for a higer price. Craigslist people....

Sorry you didn't get it,but even at 299.00 brand new it's a good one,keep looking they pop up all the time...
If you want to get rid of the unavoidable single coil hum, you're going to need to spend more than that on replacement hum-cancelling pickups. Though shielding might go a long way to cut it down. Or you could choose to only play it when you're inside a Faraday cage, but that's not exactly convenient. 
As a jazz fan, I think (or at least hope) that you love it. That sounds like a great price for a perfectly respectable piece of kit.

People love to run their mouths about everything. Especially wood choice. Can you tell the difference between ash and alder or agathis and basswood? Neither can they.
OP: Do you know that it's agathis? I thought most of the VM jazz models were basswood or maple (for the natural finish).
My VM Jazz has been solid, they are great quality for the price. I wish I had paid 100 used for mine! I had to troll Ebay with bids until I got mine $230 shipped a few years back. They go new for that now, so $100 used is a bargain. The MIM pickups are nothing to lust for but depending on the year might have been a worthwhile step up.
