My goals, out there in the open

My goals as of now:

1) Be a featured player on albums in a variety of genres (indie rock, synth pop, new wave, etc.)

2) Be both a founding member and the principal songwriter for a (at least) regionally popular original band.

3) Be in a position to sway young aspiring musicians on good gear, good lessons and ways to express creativity (using lessons from my good friends here on talkbass!)

4) Switch back and forth on at least one song using a double neck guitar/bass. ALSO if I'm super crazy switch that out for a fretless/fretted double neck.

5) Chill out and share a friendly party with a musical idol (Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Beck, Brian Ritchie, Juan Alderate, Colin/Jonny Greenwood, etc.)

This is an interesting set of goals, especially because they don't interest me despite being valid. Well, number 1 does

1. Learn new instruments. Specifically, vocal lessons, piano, upright bass, cello, mandocello/bouzouki/octave mandolin, and drums really interest me.

8. Ability to play a gig with no rehearsals (will have a shot at this soon), sight read/improvise a show, or pick up a song while listening to it.

11. Be comfortable enough singing to do a significant amount of portions on a live or recording gig.

12. Achieve status as a "go-to guy" in my area when somebody needs bass work.
This is what you want to concentrate on ... the rest may (or may not) come if you get these done. In fact, #12 will only happen when you get the others done.

Repeat after me, There is no money in the Arts, There is no money in the Arts.
It's good to have dreams. You are at the perfect age to attain some of your goals.
I have a younger friend who practices 7 hours a day under the direction of his
father, a music professor. He has developed into a very good player.
Check him out, Grant Stinnett.

Thanks guys. I just finished an hour of practice and have another 40 minutes or so available. I have obligations tonight so I won't be able to practice until much later, but I wanted to say what good practice Bach's Cello Suites are. I found an awesome cello transcription that I'm reading through

Success in all things is at least 50% who you know.
The only way you develop a reputation as someone good to work with
is by going out there and working with the people.

You should consider adding a goal of networking with your local music scene,
developing relationships with people in local bands/promoters/studios/music rags/radio.

A friend of mine sent me a text today. They were playing a show and another band on the show (who they really love) needs a bassist. I found out at 6 and I was at the venue (an hour away) at 8:30. Awesome band and they'll be sending me some links to audition with.

Hey guys,

I would like to update this thread every now and again to keep people informed of my progress (if they care) and to give me a public thing to go back to when I feel like I need motivation or advice.

SO, a couple of updates

Some friends of mine playin a band, and they were sharing the stage with another band that night that they really like, who just happened to need a bassist. I got out there the day of the gig to go see the band, and ended up meeting with them for an audition just a couple of days ago. They were very impressed with my skills and said that they ahve a few other auditions as a formality, but I sert the bar really high. THe drummer drums in several bands, plays on the drumline for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and writes the solo snare books for several of the local high schools. Both the guitarists do scoring of their own, and one of them has done several movies and other projectsz, including payment for Assassin's Creed 3 (his track won't be used, unfortunately) and TMZ. He's not a big time name yet, but falling in with a band of such great musicians who are doing what I want to be doing is a huge plus.

I have also been using my keyboard and writing a lot of stuff on my own. I am very inspired at this point in time and hope great thins will happen.

Also, Bach Cello Suites -- Almost 3/4 done! yay! I put them on the backburner in order to prepare for the audition with aforementioned band.

Sorry for all of the typos. My computer is having a weird internet issue right now, and I'm basically getting entire sentences typed up before my computer has time to display them. It's taking forever to do anything. I'll fix them when my computer decides to stop being a jerk.

Hey guys, thanks for the support!

Just wanted to report at 3:30 in the morning that I have figured out a way to write MIDI in Guitar Pro and then export to reason... increasing my working speed by a huge amount! I have been working on composing since about 11 PM and I have finished two today.

They are here on my soundcloud: soundcloud.com/dakota-potts

The two I completed tonight are "Vacancy" and "Banquet Hall". I am not 100% satisfied with either one, but at least 90%. I may re-visit them.

Also, I have registered on a website for game developers that has an entire section for musicians and audio artists, complete with a classifieds section. As soon as I feel I'm ready, I can look for all sorts of work there from unpaid side projects to full contracts... I have already e-mailed one person about a medieval style RPG that I feel I could work on fairly easily given the loose timeline.

Things are going very well for me! :hyper:

Have you looked into contributing to Battle Of Wesnoth? ( or is it Battle For Wesnoth?) Open source turned based RPG built by a community of volunteers. That sort of thing is great on your résumé and could open up doors and connect you with new people.

That name sounds very familiar with me. I will definitely check it out!

If you've played it or know that type of style, how would you say the music I linked compares to what could be expected and what could I do to take it all the way?

EDIT: Ah yes, a friend of mine played this in middle school. The music side of it looks rather dead, but I'll give it a go tomorrow and see what happens! Thanks for the link.

Did lessons from 5 to 8 today... very interesting. One of them had me teaching drums to a 5 year old student (I'm lucky I've studied some drums in the past... paradiddles kept us busy)

Wants me to do tomorrow from 3:30 to 6 and Wednesday from 3:30 to 8:00.

I know I've been keeping this bumped a lot, but I promise to keep it updated with useful information. I just don't want to start a bunch of new threads.
