i took the amp to the tech and i should hear back from him in about a week. like you guys said it may have been an iffy power tube/one shorted and it arced (?) thus messing up other parts of the amp/ or it's just about time for a whole new set of tubes. man i love this amp....but i have a feeling that just like any other 400+ owner that repairs this beast that he/she dreads this aspect of the amplifier.

well....from having this experience, it just happened out of the blue. i'm seriously contemplating buying a decent solid state head in case this ever happens live. i was playing myself and i wanted to cry hahaha. now imagine that in front of a couple hundred people!

Well this very same thing happened to me back in 1991 when I first bought my 400. It was a 2yr old amp when I got it, and two weeks into my ownership it blew a tube and the fuse at rehersal. The obvious to spot tube was replaced and new fuse and it was up and running. So the next day I went to Mesa Boogie and bought a new matched set of tubes for it so that *I* new what their condition and state was in from the get go.

i'm going to do some research and see what tubes may be best for a reutbe (which i am anticipating just in case). My tech is not a musician but he has said that Winged C's and JJ's are at the top currently. I'm thinking of perhaps getting some matched 6L6 Winged C's....and as for the preamp tubes...that's gonna be a huge dilemma!

well i just got back with my amp tech. power tube shorted out....5 are good (perhaps can be used as spares). i'm gonna go ahead and shop around for a matched dozen of winged c's or jj's. the tech told me nothing burned which was good. no resisitors...nada.

c de kick: i know you've been on the boogie venture when it comes to 400's (non and +). so JJ's are your choice....how would you compare them to others? thats a very open ended question, sorry. just wanna know how my palette of sound is going to be once i take the dive. also....i'm not going for super savings but i'm guessing eurotubes has pretty competitive pricing like anyone else (?). getting a matched dozen is not very common so that's why i'm asking.

eurotubes rules. got a matched dozen of jj's. i still got some life in the preamp tubes but i will convert soon :). the pricing is also superb compared to what i found else where! some places wanted to charge upwards to $300+ for a matched dozen of jj's!
