My music taste surprises me sometimes

I'm in high school. The music I see people enjoying is always either pop, hip-hop/rap, rock, or classic rock (I differentiate because a lot of the modern stuff - My Chemical Romance, Pierce the Veil, etc. isn't very good :/)

And that's where my surprise comes in. I've developed a somewhat large brand of music preferences. Ranging from prog metal (Dream Theater) to punk (Dead Kennedys) to alt rock (Killers) to classic rock (Led Zeppelin), it's kind of all over, but largely in that one area - rock/metal.

I think I love soul. James Brown's vocals, those funky basslines . . . Why have I not discovered this before?!? I think I thank Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music" for introducing me. And I hate to stereotype, but I'm a nerdy Jewish kid. Music really is universal.

So, I guess to keep this as a legitimate thread . . . Good/Favorite soul bassists? What's your opinion on the genre?

I was always told he was soul, so I kind of began to associate that funky sound with soul. Pickett, Sly & the Family Stone. I almost consider funk a subgenre of soul.

Well, I listen to a lot of jazz and classical, too, reggae and electronic, I just didn't include that because my favorites are under rock. That was the point I was trying to make.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I probably am, I'm not a lifelong fan of funk/soul. I'm not pretending to know anything about the genres.

Excellent! Keep broadening.

Bassists to listen to? A lot. The usual suspects: Paul Chambers, Jimmy Blanton, Ron Carter, Ray Brown, Edgar Meyer, Renaud Garcia-Fons, Gary Karr, and so many, many more.

Good taste, I was a lot like you in high school (she says, only having graduated in 2014 ;)). I'd say it's always good to broaden your horizons a little bit. All throughout high school (and even now) I was all about the basic "rock" genre (grunge/punk/alt/classic), but then my drummer friend joined a jazz band and I started listening to that a bit. I've also recently been getting into more acoustic/stripped down stuff.

I have to agree with your opinions on Jack White and The Black Keys, both of which I love...it's pretty funny that they're often grouped together given the fact that Jack White hates The Black Keys.
