You want a pic of the cover? I can get one. BTW - just after I got mine, another TB member contacted me (Simple?) indicating he had one for sale. So...of the few of these that were made, we have 4 of them here? Not bad.
Yeah I'd love to get a paint sample/code so I can match it as close as I can. Or is it just 'pink'? haha, it looks like there is some orange mixed in there too. Salmon color maybe?
I'd like to know where the guy who did the restoration got the decals. Or are those original?
Gweimer, I dont need a pic of the cover. But I DO need a few pics of the bridge mute. Mine is missing. It looks like it is a piece of thick felt with a metal bracket. What does that metal bracket look like?

Hey congrats! I do remember Magnatone having made a
few basses but finding one anymore is rarer than Bigfoot
sightings. I have run into their Mark series guitars on
occasion but the basses just don't seem to turn up.

It's actually more like candy apple red but my cell phone camera is not the best. My bass still has the original decals and pickguard.

I just recently acquired a 1964 (I believe) Magnatone Hurricane. It was my dad's bass since he was 12, and it's been in the family ever since. However, my beloved cousin sanded it all down because the paint was starting to chip off. I almost disowned him because I love old beat up vintage gear with some mojo to it. Here's what the bass looks like now. I have all of the original parts, but the bottom tail of the pickguard had broke into 2 pieces. It's ok though...the parts fit together ok and all that shows is a little crack. I'm going to try my best however to get it back to it's original color and state. You can kinda see the original color in the pickup hole. It was black with gold flakes. Once I get it painted, I might try to age it a little just to get it back to the vintage look....any ideas?
Mine turned out pretty cool in matte black. I know that they came in sunburst, but everything in the '60s came in sunburst. You could also do something like coral.

That really brought back some memories! I bought a new '66 Tornado guitar in the same color scheme...my first "real" guitar. Would like to have kept it, but...the insanity of youth!

I do actually have the original pickup actually, but it was totally shot because when I was 12, I was curious as to how things worked. End of story.
Thankfully though, I found a guy in Nashville that rewinds pickups for $30, so I sent it to him today to get rewound. I'm really excited to get it back and try it out. I've heard it's not as big as a P, but not as bright as a J....which is pretty much the sound I'm looking for. I can't wait to play this sucker!
You should have waited, and sent it to Jason Lollar. Since the Magnatone was the creation of Paul Barth, the guy who designed the original pickups for Rickenbacker, Lollar would like know the ins and outs of that pickup. He'd have gotten it back to the original sound for you. Keep that in mind.
I got Kevin Smith to do it for me (Link Removed), and I definitely have faith in him to do it right. I kind of want him to rewind it a little hotter just so I can get a little more of an aggressive sound out of it. I'm working with a limited budget right now, and I was actually told by my guitar tech to send it to Lindy Fralin, but he was a lot more expensive. He's pretty much the guy who anyone in Nashville sends their pickups to from what I hear. Thanks for the heads up though! I'll keep him in mind next time.
Magnatone really was best known for thier amps. High end stuff in it's day. Not only did they have true pitch shifting vibrato, they also had a few stereo vibrato models. They really were the Cadillac of amps in the late 50's.
Actually the 260 in my screen name is from my love of the Magantone Model 260 amp, from an old Magnatone/Valco amp forum.

So I finally finished "Maggie." I had the pickup rewound, and it sounds amazing. I also did all the paint myself and I took it back to its original color. Adjusted the truss rod and tweaked it a little, and now it plays like a great bass. Can't wait to gig with it this weekend!
Wow.. and here I thought I was the only guy with a working Magnatone Hurricane! Mine was refinished to natural a LONG time ago- the nitro is all crackled! Gweimer- where did your luthier get parts? Mine came with cheap roundwounds on it and I finally got around to putting some flats on it - sounds killer with the mute! The pickup is okay, but I'm seriously considering making a tortoise shell PG and mounting a Darkstar in it- I'm thinking it will be the end-all! Those necks really are killer and the zero fret makes for some amazing action. The weird topnut contraption is strange though... but it works! I'll try to get some pics up for y'all.
Thanks for all the info gents! I recently took possession of a Hurricane in pretty decent shape, though the finish has been removed and the body clear-coated. I'm thinking hard about refinishing it (from the cavity it looks as though this one was originally metallic blue).

The device is currently inoperative, and I'm wondering if there's supposed to be a spring that pushes the felt pad up in opposition to the simple tensioner / thumbwheel arrangement. Make sense? I'll try and post a pic later but anyone who's ever seen one of these bridges will know immediately what I'm referring to....

Well, ain't this the zombie thread! I don't think the (my) mute mechanism is spring loaded. There's "play" in the mechanism in both directions, and it is fairly stiff in both directions. Mind you, it may have had a spring originally that is not present now.
one was just sold on ebay I missed it at the last 10 seconds...anyway it went for $710...funny thing is I seen a post somewhere showing a picture of a bass listed on mygear..I looked up mygear and found his 'expired' post with his phone # ..I called him he said he just sold it two weeks ago and he would have given me a good deal if I contacted him two weeks ago told me he sent it to Vintage City guitar and the sent him a check for $105.00 ...yes $105.00 so I went to vintage city ....and seen it listed as 'sold'... guess what ...it's the same bass that sold on ebay...that's twice I lost the same bass in two days!....
