A long time ago I had gas for a Stingray type 5. I mean who doesn't. So I bought an OLP on closeout as it was $115 to my door. Quite a bargain if I say so myself. I felt this left me with a bit of cash to start some mods. And it began....
Hipshot Ultralites and a Carvin/Hipshot bridge, replacing the black mother of toilet seat pickguard with solid black, Hipshot string retainer, and a re-plane and re-fret. The Mono Knob gigged and slayed.
I thought it would be nice if I could also get a P bass sound from this so I added a Wilkinson $20 P from China and swapped in a Wilkinson bridge, because, well, because.
I loved this bass. The blend of the classic pickup tones, the light weight. The FretFX LEDs on the side. So much to love.
Yet it wasn't enough. So a new body was made from scratch. Alder with a purpleheart center strip because the alder I had wasn't quite wide enough, and to tell people it's the secret to the tone. Some black & blue stain, matte finish waterbase poly. Custom 3D printed knobs & strap buttons. A new pickguard attempting to severely infringe on IP, attached with 3M spray mount, no screws. A Hipshot vintage style bridge. And to finish it off La Bella Low Tension Flats. The first flats I've ever bought (currently loving them). Controls are just a blend & volume. It's a beast! I think I'm in for about $700+ at this point.
Remaining original items are neck and fretboard wood, truss rod, MM pickup. I will never change that pickup. It's the best sounding MM I've ever played. When I first added the P I put it right up against the MM which was about 3/16" away from the traditional spot. For the new body I pushed it a bit closer to the neck.
