My opinion on Dingwall

Performing over the past year or so and over 160 gigs with either my NG3 or my JT 5 strings. Extremely happy and satisfied with these basses. A bit of tonal differences due to the different preamps (Darkglass Tone Capsule vs Neve Design) and body woods (Alder vs Nyatoh) but both are extremely smooth to play, easily set up and a joy to play. Highly recommend either.

The JT-5 and DarkRay5 are 2 excellent choices. They each bring something different to the table and are both the top of the line factory builds.

Keeping the Fretless around makes perfect sense as well. My fretless is an EBMM 5 and happens to be my last remaining EBMM StingRay. It will never be my main player. Just like my PBass with flats……. it’s a necessary tool to keep around because I’ll reach for it when that exclusive sound is needed.


The Neve and the Mike Pope are my all time favorite preamps. Smooth, refined, with just the right blend of vintage and modern. Nothing is ever over powering and nothing is ever lacking.

Couldn’t I run the JT passive with my Darkglass Harmonic Booster pedal and basically have an NG3 tone wise, or not quite?

You can get pretty much any tone you want out of either utilizing outboard gear as you mention. My Alder body NG3 has more mid and upper mid presence, mostly due to the Alder body wood as I have experienced in all my Alder body basses. The JT has a bit flatter tone with a bit more bottom end. I run very little to no onboard tone adjustments and often just run in passive mode. My current pedalboard is based around the Darkglass Anagram and I can get similar sounds from either bass with light tweaking. JT model is a bit heavier bass than my NG3 also. They both are a joy to play.

I just got a JT-3 in 5 string.
Absolutely excellent neck- how I missed it, fit and finish is good, sounds good, neck solo anf B&N pups sound great, very throaty and smoove.

Is it worth the retail of $3700? Absolutely not, what a joke for a Chinese, solid color bass, but for what I paid? yes, every penny.

With tax you’re talking right at $4000. With Jason’s price at fret nation, along with him not charging sales tax, you’re paying almost half off with today’s pricing. In 2024, the 4 string version was $2650.

$2500 is a good price for these MSRP.
Honestly about as good as it gets for a mass produced instrument, but, again, they saved money with China, they should pass that along to you.

Ray's are priced $500 too high, same with Frnders.

$3700 is just redonkulous.


And yeah, no sales tax is what finally made me jump.

But now I'm broke, GAS is cured, nothing else I'm jonesing for, well, kinda, but that can wait till next year.
