My recordings come out compressed

Let us know your signal path, interface and software. Your computer should be fine, it's the chain of events leading up to the computer that would be the issue.
Screened lead from MP3 to 3.5mm jack
or
Guitar into Bandlab Link Analog Mini and same lead into the jack.

Software is Bandlab or Windows Voice Recorder.

I don’t have any problems with the Link Analog into my phone.
 
sounds to me like a phasing issue. the information you've provided doesn't automatically tell me where your problem(s) is coming from: i'm not familiar with your gear/programs/process. ;)

Guitar into Bandlab Link Analog Mini and same lead into the jack.
this may be the source of the phasing: when you 'combine' the two signals = one is out of phase with the other and result is that "underwater" sound.

but i'm just guessing: i don't have a clear picture of your recording 'technique'.

By same lead, I meant same lead as I used to plug the MP3 player into the laptop. There is only one signal going into the laptop.

Brother, you can’t expect crystal clear quality when you’re Mickey Mousing it together. I don’t mean that as an insult in any way, sometimes we gotta make what we have available work for us!

Your best bet is to buy an interface that plugs in USB to your computer, from there you can get Reaper, a free (well, they don’t make you buy it, but it helps them greatly!) DAW. With $50-$150 (depends if you buy an interface used or not) you can be getting some really great sounding recordings.

Once you’ve got an interface, you just plug a regular 1/4” cable into it and you’re off to the races. There are a bunch of free or dirt cheap amp sims out there, you just need to do a little digging into it. I’m sure in this forum alone there are links for them. But even going direct, with no amp sims or anything, the quality will be so much better than what you’re getting now. The amount of signal degradation your experiencing is from using various things to get a signal from one thing to another, each step of the way your degrading it. You need to go in the opposite direction.
 
The clip sounds like it is being filtered and compressed, the same way Muzak or call-waiting music does on a traditional telephone. I read an article a while ago about that "effect", and can't recall many of the technical details, but basically in telephony, they need to greatly limit the amount of data transmitted and achieve that by aggressive filtering and compression. Again, that is what your sound clips is to my ears and I cannot tell you why. Upgrading to a better recording system would probably help greatly.

From what I read about this device, it's designed to be used with a phone. If your computer has the same type of headphone/microphone jack as the phone (TRRS), then I assume it should work. However, I know my computer does not, so I would not expect this to work for me.
 
The problem with using your computer's line in input is that there is no hardware in place to control the input level. These built-in line and mic inputs are really only intended for video conferencing, and not recording live music. These inputs will have some form of 'Automatic Gain Control' (AGC) which is basically a compressor with a very slow release time.

An audio interface connects to your computer via a USB cable and will have rotary knobs to control the input level, which is a critical first step in recording, because that's when and where the analog input signal is converted to digital so it can be recorded and processed by the computer. The audio interface also converts the digital back to analog for playback.
