Too much purple or perfect?

Well, is this a yea or nay?

I was considering getting another pick guard but I kinda like this and it is a 57 reissue after all.

Opinions?

If you want to see why it was refinished and why it is purple check out my blog, the bass is at the bottom of the latest entry:

DogBone, I just read your profile and was surprised that your bass was called blue by Fender.

In the little profile pic of you it seems similar to the color I had mine painted.

Mine is the new "Plum Crazy" that was on the Dodge Charger Daytona and the limited edition SRT8 Charger a few years ago.

Sometimes the Plum Crazy really picks up a lot of a blue tint.

Yep, the Fender MIM "Midnight Blue" of the late '90s/early '00s is sorta (in)famous for being more purple than blue. When the sun hits it, or in a flash photo it looks very blue. Otherwise it takes on shades of a very dark purple.

I love it, and have gotten more compliments on it than any other bass I've ever owned.

Plum Crazy is an awesome color! But I'm a Mopar nut, so I guess I'm biased. ;)

Nice job, merc50! I'm not normally a fan of purple basses but I grew up working in an auto parts store during the muscle car era and I saw many a Chrysler product finished in Plum Crazy. I think you did this bass good. Your car (also very nice, by the way) just got an image enhancement by having a matching Fender P Bass in the back seat!

Thanks bigntasty.

This year is the big 50th for the Dallas Autorama (a show I have been going to since before I can remember) and probably the last one in Market Hall (the host building).

I am not much into the indoor car show scene but my plan is to have the car ready by then and to display the bass with it.

Only problem is I will have to baby sit the dang thing the whole time so it does not get stolen.

So yes, I was going for the "image enhancement" by having it match the car LOL.

Color is very subjective but just like music there are rules that can help you find the your ideal answer.

Color Theory 101

Opposites on the color wheel will create contrast.
1)Purple-Yellow
2)Blue-Orange
3)Red-Green
Of theses 3 combos I ordered them by strength #1 having the strongest contrast #3 having the least.
You chose the the strongest of all the possible contrasting colors for your bass.

Just like I would never tell another musician what note to play
I wouldn't dare tell someone what color to choose.

That said IMHO, I would change the pick guard to a lighter or darker blue or maybe a real dark green or a white, black, grey or chrome. I once got rid of a red bass because I thought it was to flashy so I may be a prudish when it comes to bass colors.
