Well, n00b to the site, not so much to playing bass
I'm Billy, I'm 36, I've been a bassist for about 13 years. I've played guitar (not well) since I was a kid, since music is sorta a family thing and I'm just the latest installment. It's primarily a casual hobby for me, but I have been in a few bands and played quite a lot of bar gigs, one wedding, and one parade (yes, a parade lol). Until recently I played mostly covers. Never had much talent for songwriting. But my current band is all original material. It's really exciting to be involved in the songwriting process, and it's really forcing me to learn more about music theory.
We're already on our second drummer (drummers...) but the chemistry is great in the band. We recorded an album in November and are already 3 songs deep into a second. We're getting a little proggy, and I'm excited to be part of the writing process.
So that's the gist of my musical career. But as I've really put a lot of effort into my involvement with this new band, I have realized how very little I really know about gear. I have a ton of Peavey amps, which admittedly I sort of fell into. But they've been great and you know how it is when you know what to expect from something. Schecter guitars initially drew me in with their aesthetics, but I have to say i love their playability and general quality. But outside of this stuff, I don't really know that much. I'm just barely really getting into learning how to match a cab to an amp, and I'm hoping to draw on the knowledge of this forum to learn more. I'm interested in expanding my knowledge of guitar hardware, amps, cabs, recording, live sound...anything and everything. I know what seems to be good based on reputation, but not so much why it's good, or what specifically makes it better than other stuff.
My current gigging setup is two Schecter 5-strings: an Elite and a Studio. Both have EMG HZ40 active pickups. The Elite has 2-band EQ and the Studio is 3. Both are mahogany with maple/walnut neckthroughs, although the Elite is also a string-through. My amp is a Peavey Tour TNT 115 with a Headliner 210 extension cab. 600 watts with the extension hooked up, and enough to rattle things in my 100-year-old house. For effects I typically only use a Big Muff, but have used a wah in the past and am considering getting another. I'm definitely ready to learn how to improve my sound and see what other people are doing.
