NAD! Ashdown MAG 300 Combo 115 (Quick Review)

I didn't get this amp today, I got it on Saturday but couldn't find the time to post it, so here it is! :)

I did a 4 hour rehearsal on Friday with a 50 watt Vox escort amp (I had a gig the day after) and something went wrong. The notes just got really distorted and farted out. Sounded like the speaker is damaged/broken. So on Saturday, I went out to a music store called HoBo music, and I found this ashdown for £229. I thought it seemed too cheap for it to sound good, but I gave it a quick test. Wow, was I wrong. It sounds FANTASTIC, and that was with a cheap squier affienty jazz. So I had to bring it home. Took it to the gig and the other bass player loved it too.

Quick Review:
Features: The features are available online, but I'll run through them anyway.
Input: I tend to have this pretty low (about 3 or 4). Can get pretty nasty if you bring it past 6 or 7
Deep Switch: I use it, gives a nice boom
Bright Switch: I don't use it, still a good feature though
EQ switch: I always have the EQ in. Not too keen on the sound of this amp flat
Input Level Meter: Classic Ashdown. Really great feature. Stops you from getting a dirty sound (Unless that's what you want).
EQ: Really smashing EQ. Has the standard B, M, T but then 2 extra knobs (low mid and high mid). I'm sure you could get any sound under the sun with this EQ alone. I go for a more punk rock, trebley "ampeg" sound, and it does it very well
Sub-harmonics: I have no use for it, still a nice feature though. Just adds a lower octave to your sound
D.I: Haven't used it yet, but I can see it being very handy in the future
Effects loop: Again, I don't need it, but still a nice touch
Tuner/Line output: This^^
Output: I have this at 3 when I'm just practicing. At 10, it still has a very clean sound, if the input level is low enough

Sound:
I was blown away by how it sounded in the store, and I still am now! I use my Mexican Fender P bass (Standard) through it, and it sounds great. I use it to get a punchy, trebley tone, but it can definitely handle pretty much any music genre I imagine. Has tons of bass

Reliability:
I can't really comment on the reliability of this amp, as I have only had it a couple of days. I seems very well built though

Overall Impression:
What can I say. It's a fantastic amp. Not perfect by any means, but close enough for me. It's loud, clean and best of all, CHEAP! Still blown away by the price of these things. Overall, I would give this amp a 9/10

Just a quick cell phone snap for you

Nice score! I got a great deal on a mag 300 head/avatar 2x10 cab - $150 plus traded my old Ampeg BA-115 mkI.

I like the same kind of tone you do...what eq settings do you use? I keep most at about 6, maybe a little more in the bass/lo mid/mid and a little less for the other two since my bass has a lot of bite to it.

Thanks man :) That is a great deal!
At the moment I have my EQ at:
Bass:4
Low Mid:2
Mid:4
High Mid:8
Treble:10

And I also have the deep switch pushed in. Hope that helps :)

Thanks, I'm still playing with mine now that I know what kind of tone I want. I'm cranking the top three to about a 7 right now, maybe I'll try backing off the bass and low mid. I'm after a more midrangey sound.

It's funny that I have to use so much eq even going active, but the Mag300 has a very smooth sound when everything's flat.

Hi Guys I bought a Ashdown Mag 300 and found it great until I realised that it only gave me 200watts with the Standard Blue 8 ohms speaker, you need to add a 8 ohms extension cab to get 300watts out of it,
I have just replaced the 8 ohms speaker with a 4 ohms speaker and what a difference, louder and better bottom end tone etc superb and now I don't need an extension cab to get 300watts out of the combo.

I used to use an Ashdown Electric Blue 180 with a one of those 15" blueline speakers. Plugging in an Ashdown Mag 210T extension speaker allowed me to get 300 watts out of it and was a great addition for club gigs.

Enjoy your new amp!

What 4 ohm speaker did you choose?
