NAD - Reviving an almost dumpster bound amp - Streamliner 600

The Pre in these streamliners is outstanding. I use mine as a DI as my band is “silent stage” ( i.e. electronic drums, no amps) Its superior to any DI box Ive tried.

It’s not that important. My thinkin is, a GB Streamliner would really need to be shot to be a dumpster piece.

Curiously, I don’t understand why members are reluctant to discuss costs on this forum. Are we asked not to? I often ask what someone spent when I too am considering spending $$$ for the same service or equipment. Is there a rule Im unaware of?

Plus one on the great preamp and I could have kept it that way.

I got the amp with the receiver which was something I intended to buy in the first place. I am giving you a ballpark but I reserve the right to not tell you the exact price. It's my prerogative.

Now regarding aged horse rates, he sent me a form but I am not sure if I am suppose to share that. Unless you have blocked him and can't IM him that's a different story, just reach out.

Again what it costs me including shipping is my prerogative to share. I do not want to set expectations because every repair is a case to case basis and I feel that I am messing with aged horse business if I share that. If I say you paid too much for that hum repair, I could be totally wrong because I am likely to assume that the hum is just a grounding issue but may have been something major like a power module. I have also extremely discounted shipping rates as a perk with my company and that skews the total cost even more.

Yes even if an amp is cosmetically clean, it could be shot electronically and unrepairable.. You have the option donate the chassis the knobs etc. I personally think that's an environmentally responsible approach.

On the flipside my SWR 350 is really scratched and beat up with bent metal and still works with just the mild pop when turning it on. I have had it it since 1991 and in one of the bands I play with rehearsal space and gets taken to my gigs with them.

Wow. So making the amp work harder is the key to unlocking the "soft clip" power amp feature. Do you have wiring instructions/pics/diagrams for Speakon cables or does anybody make that cable? My AI doubleshot which is not very sensitive has a power rating of 600 watts. But probably not a good idea to power it with the Streamliner at 2 or 3 on the master volume dial

Costs can vary depending on what’s wrong and the condition of the amp. Typically it runs $100 flat but there are limitations on this flat rate program.

What another shop might charge is unrelated to the factory flat rate service program costs.

It's a "thing" for some people... kinda like between two things, bear with me...

It's "bad etiquette" ( apparently, I've heard) for the very rich to discuss actual costs of things casually; and, why does a car salesman, alone with you in a room, write down a number and slide it across the table?

Maybe it's just a courtesy to avoid throwing numbers around. I understand this; one's financial circumstances are not really anyone's business. $100 can be a big or small number, and throwing it around willy nilly can really have an affect on someone that sees it as a big number.

I agree that flippant use of repair cost TO A SINGLE INSTANCE is kinda irresponsible. Every case is its own state of affairs, especially when we're talking electronics which can fail with nearly identical symptoms yet with completely different causes.

@agedhorse is 100% the most logical and reasonable answer to Repair for the GB units. What person "A" paid may not be what person "B" paid; if for no other reason than "A" needed troubleshooting and some deoxit.... person "B" needed a new sub-assembly even though the symptoms being exhibited seemed the same to each end user.

It is actually a responsible and reasonable choice to not discuss the cost to THIS EXACT CASE, lest someone get the wrong idea on a far worse unit.

Or there's an additional cost because somebody got into the amp with DeOxit or "miracle cure-all" spray and created a time consuming mess that must be cleaned up.

One thing about factory level repairs, they should be of the same quality as the original build. This means a professional repair with quality workmanship, cleanliness and reliability. I simply will not get involved with a sloppy, improper repair that won't end well, that's just not right.

Read through that whole long thread--there are links to another thread with a wiring diagram, plus this helpful instruction from agedhorse about making the connections completely inside the Neutrik Speakon connector housing, which is what I eventually did. Speakon cables don't require soldering, which is nice. I don't know if there are commercial products like this available.

One of my favorite amps and currently my main amp for most of the gigs I have. Pairs well with the PJB or my Barefaced Super Twin. It can cop so many tones and is just ridiculously versatile.

Very much worth saving. Enjoy!

Ah - Got it. I can use a 16 AWG for this correct. I think 2 14 might not fit the connector (for the neat look). My EA's are 300 watts each at 4Ohm. I should probably buy the cable from you Bob .

16 gauge is plenty fine.

Might as well load some sound samples. Considering I only have a few hours messing with this. I rarely deviated from the suggested EQ above.



Those who have tucked away their Streamliner, you know it is a good amp. Thanks Andy! @agedhorse and @bobcruz and everyone here.

The strings BTW are Magma Ultra Flats. If you want brighter flats that is similar to Chrome and Cobalts the this is a good string. I think I have had it for 6 months and it still sound like new. And EMG Geezer pickups. BTW, no effects, no compression, no EQ, no fancy preamps or exotic interface, just the one that is in a Zoom H6. I just dragged the wav files to Logic and adjusted the balance between the DI and the miced cab. The drum tracks are from the Wheelhouse app, featuring Charlie Hunter's drummers. Crunch and distortion on track #10 is just from the amp.
