I did a quick and dirty recording of all the pickup combos. All SEVEN.

For all recordings except the one labeled "tone rolled" - the volume and tone controls are wide open. This was straight into my laptop on the Audio Box Go. Levels were a bit hot now that I'm listening but it'll give you an idea of what these pickups sound like. Playing fingerstyle between the P and the J pickups.

Tone was about 75% on the "tone rolled off" TBird + P which is one of my favorite settings on this bass.

I've been working on some Thunderhorse variants like one with 3 Soapbars, one with just a neck and middle pickup (the Thumper), a Shortscale and a 5 string. Possibly a short scale 5 string too.

Any advice on tradeshows to go to? US only for now.

I've got some fun builds coming soon. I have some prototype Thunderhorse 5s, Shortscale 4 strings and Thunderhorse 4s with different bridge pickup routes I'm bringing to the Bass Channel studio next week for some audio samples. I just built a fun Thunderhorse 4 with 3 MM soapbars. Its has a switch for each pickup to choose between Series, SIingle coil and Parallel. Chris from the Bass Channel said he wanted tonal options so I think that will do! lol

The gold Thunderhorse is being reborn with a few mods and heading back my way this week.

After a year of collecting feedback from myself and other Thunderhorse players, Cormac has made quite a few enhancements. I had one of the first 1.5" nut width horses and the newer ones have a slightly altered headstock shape and geometry. The controls also come in many options now, including a much simpler set of sliders à la Bass VI for on/off each pickup and a single volume/tone.

I had the opportunity to catch up with Cormac at NAMM and play all the new models he had on hand. So much variety, so fun. His booth was packed most of the show.

I played one particular Thunderhorse that I loved, and Cormac and I cooked up a plan for the gold Thunderhorse #7 to be sent back to the mothership to be similarly appointed.

As things do, it got more involved once he got his hands on it and started working. He ended up routing the bass for the new switches and control layout, and the cherry on top was a new roasted flame maple neck with the updated headstock.

I'm excited for the simpler control layout as I rarely use any "in between" tones and I think so many pots in the circuit likely sucks up tone along the way. I usually run neck tbird + P with tone rolled down a bit. This will be a more foolproof setup for sure.

I'll have more to report when it heads back to me. I've enjoyed developing a friendship with Cormac, contributing some feedback (maybe more than he wants to hear sometimes ), and watching the McGrath journey as new models and custom build options are released.
