While I understand that younger people use the forums here and the Internet is otherwise a very sanitary place (tongue firmly in cheek), are there really no granular controls here so adults can actually speak like adults and kids can be protected from such evils?

You may be ok with posting f-bombs, but that's generally not socially acceptable behavior, and that's why it wasn't allowed.
You are free to talk like an adult however you want elsewhere, but we have rules here that everyone agreed to when they registered as a member on this website.

Why yes, there are. They are called browsers, which you can use to navigate to "other forums".
As @MJ5150 pointed out, there are rules here, which you (and other users) agreed to.
If the rule at my house is "no drinking", and you drink, I will throw you out. You can ask me to check your id and allow you to drink if you're over 21, but I don't have to agree to do it - it's my house.
It is entirely possible to express oneself adequately without profanity. Challenging sometimes, but quite do-able. And as a user here who is no stranger to profanity, I find the caliber of conversation here is better for its absence.

I appreciate your thoughts and comments, but that's not what my initial post was asking for. It was about the forum software and configurability.

Incidentally, I'd like to add that I think you guys might be taking it a bit too seriously when, as a result of Gorn asking what I was talking about, I posted what caused me to ask

In response to that question, you posted a screenshot with profanity, specifically the f-bomb three times.
That is a violation of the rules at TalkBass.
That is why you received a warning, not for asking a legitimate question.

I'm struggling to see what you could possibly discuss about playing bass that you would need to protect minors from.

If you want to discuss adult topics I'm pretty sure there is no shortage of sites for that but this isn't one of them.

You’re more than welcome to ask questions if you don’t understand the rationale behind a rule or even want to question the rule, but while doing so you have to obey the rules.

If you want to question something about profanity, you can’t post a profanity laced picture. You can’t tell me there weren’t other ways to get your point across.

If I were you I would maybe review the rules again since rules 2 and 5 seemed to have escaped you. If you don’t like the rules, then maybe TB just isn’t the place for you?

Well while I can see the OP's point, I can also agree with the forum admins too. It's their site and their rules.

That said, I'm 67 and the amount of profanity I hear every single day from so-called "kids" in the real world far far surpasses anything I've heard during my lifetime and at times I can cuss like a sailor. Most kids today can be classified as little smart *you know what's* who disrespect adults daily. Mine don't but I've seen plenty who do.
