@bmoriarty -- just a quick little update on the string situation... I put a set of D'Addario NYXL 32-130 on last week and I cannot rave enough about them. No doubt this is what I'm going to be running with from now on with this bass. They really sing. Zingy, but not clanky, still have a nice warmth, and pulls the mid-range up a bit. I love the tension and feel, too... just right. Give 'em a try, I can guarantee you'll love them on your bass.

Hey sorry for the delayed response. I’ll have to check them out on my next change. I’ve been playing Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flat Wound Bass - 6-St Long Scale 34" .033-.136. They just barely fit but sound great. It seemed my c string was a little thin (low volume) with the rounds. Flats helped out a lot. These are not ordinary flats they are kind of bright for flats and have a lot of character.

@bmoriarty -- I wound up going another direction with the strings and am even happier. I put on a set of D'Addario Half Rounds (ENR71-6). At first I wasn't thrilled, but they grew quickly on me and I'm really liking them after a couple months now. They don't seem to be wearing down much (huge plus for me) and have just enough brightness to keep me happy. They feel great without being sticky at all.

Cool. I think Patitucci uses half wounds. I never thought I’d be a flat wound guy but they work on this bass. Sound wise after trying a couple of different sans amps at my church services I ended up with a Tone hammer di. The tone hammer adds a nice fundamental and shapes the Yamaha pickups nicely. I run it after an empress effects compressor. It all sounds very nice through the churches sound system and for recording at home. The compressor dials back some of the low end energy without killing the fundamental and lets the high strings ring clear. It also adds a little double bass like attack in the mix, set to a slow attack setting.
