NBD: 2021 rickenbacker 4003 jetglo

Nice basses, I bought a new jetglo 4003S this year and really like the vintage knobs, I was hoping it had them. I still wish they would shave the necks a little like my old 4001, there is no reason they need to be thick, oh sorry I'm complaining in the wrong thread, this belongs in the Rickenbacker thread.

I hear you. My 96 is thin all the way up (and also the most fussy to setup/adjustment/weather).

But to me 4 strings can do just about any shape and be fine by my books. It is the 5’s and sixes that i start to get mega fussy.

for me the neck on this bass just feels fantastic. After the first look i never thought about it again.

I had a couple of early to mid 90's 4003s and they were both very nice playing and sounding basses with thin necks.

That just looks like cream binding, the newer clearcoats and ABS plastic binding dont yellow like nitro over celluloid. I like it, the bright white binding is pretty in your face, this gives it a slightly aged look. A cream pickguard would look great with that too.

I liked the gloss fretboard also. But when dirty, it starts to lose the shine. Satin… remains satin.

plus some of the gloss fretboards laquer likes to lift, crack, change color (collect grime) around the frets.

I've owned several Ric's over the years, and I was never a a fan of those glossy fretboards. One of the few things I didn't like about Ric's. I'm glad they did away with them. Makes a potential re-fret easier if ever needed too. I think they make the fretboard look nicer too. Lets the wood grain show through better IMO.

The new cream binding looks good, like that on my old March '73 4001.

Ditto! My 1973 4001's cream binding blends in nicely. Mine's a bit road worn after many gigs, and I keep the pickup cover in the case.

I'm always in a mild state of 4003 GAS, but the oiled fretboard option is intriguing. If anything, it makes it a hell of a lot easier to refret the thing in the unlikely event you play it that much to where it needs it. Or even a fret dress, you have a lot more room before your finger pads start pressing on the fingerboard itself. Especially the 4003s without the binding, but I don't see that option on any of the 4003s's yet.

In saying that, I've always loved the shiny appearance of the thick finish too...

I don't think it's an option. It's just the way they do it now.
