Wild. Are those the original pickups? I haven't seen single pole piece under a string on a jazz from Fender.

The first generation of the Jazz (American) Deluxe 5 had single pole pickups and 5 in a line tuners. They are called "Suhr era" because John Suhr was doing design work for Fender at the time.

The second genration went to double pole "noiseless" pickups and 4+1 tuners.

EDIT: Actually there were some models with double pole pickups and 5-in line tuners, then the tuners went to 4+1, then the fingerboard dots were replaced by blocks. That's at least four versions. You can find all of these easily selling used online.

The American Deluxe Jazz Bass V, introduced in 1995, sported a downsized body shape and a 22-fret neck with the choice of rosewood, maple or pao ferro fretboard with abalone dot position markers, featuring the same specifications as the Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V. It was updated in 2004 with two Samarium Cobalt Noiseless pickups, 4+1 tuners and an 18V preamp. Fender redesigned this model in 2010.

The 2010 redesign is when the dots were replaced by blocks.

When I first moved to the St. Louis area back in 1996, I bought a Suhr Era Jazz V that was very similar to the OP’s. It was a great playing and sounding bass. At the time, I did not like that it had the large single pole pieces. Looking back, I could kick myself for being so shallow.

This. I actually had a 1997/1998 'Standard' Jazz V (Mexican made) that had the 5-in-line Gotoh tuners (or a licensed version of them). It was my first Jazz V..... Like most things I sold/traded away when I was younger, I wish I had it back for nostalgia's sake.

Agree, there are at least 4 different load outs of this one "model name". The single pole and gotoh tuner was the least common in the internet search. You don't happen to have which years have which features?

We almost have that together in the thread. Would not be surprised if there is a 5th load out.

Here's the block fingerboard, 2011 catalog (2010 catalog shows no American Deluxe Jazz!). This is when the fingerboard switched from pau ferro to rosewood.

This was replaced by the Elite and then the Ultra of today.

NOTE: the high MSRP is from when "street price" of 30% off was not shown in price lists like today. These sold for about $1500 in 2011.

I wanted to say, thanks to all who have shared their experience, wisdom and knowledge about this era Jazz basses here. It is truly appreciated. I already felt ( during Monday's practice) this bass would vie for number 1 or 2 in my stable rotation. Y'all have underscored how special it is.

Meanwhile I have repaired the stripped strap pin so it's ready to play again.
