NBD Boring sunburst finds a home

Hi, everyone. My very first basses were a sunburst Hohner followed by a sunburst Squier Jazz (a great instrument that I sadly broke into pieces on stage in a fit of Nirvana-induced pique). Over several years I swung away from sunburst, thinking them tired and old hat.

Maybe now I am old hat, as in the last few months I have had the urge to find a sunburst P as my final (promise!) bass. I had to search a surprisingly long time for this one - a Fender Custom Shop 63 P in sunburst, journeyman finish. So far, I'm very happy with it - it's the first 'new' bass I have bought in years, and I was very lucky to get a good deal on this one, given it was advertised as a 2022 build that the store had had for a while. Other stores were only offering relics and heavy relics.

It plays really well. I still don't feel the difference between the 7.25 radius and the 9.5 radius on my other basses, so maybe I am missing something there.

I think the pickguard on this bass is slightly less grim than the awful tort that the CS usually has on their basses - but I'm still not a big fan. I have an Avantguard pickguard on another P that I plan to swap on to this one to give it a lift.

Last bass.

Congratulations on your new bass. It has just the right amount of relicing, which is hard to find with current FCS offerings. I've had FCS basses with 7.25 and 9.5, and I can't tell a difference either.

The Avantguard pickguard should look fantastic. I think he has the most authentic vintage products available today.

The only thing I have to disagree with is "Last bass". I can't tell you how many times I've said that. Enjoy your new Precision and any others that may follow.

Maybe sunburst is not the most flashy color. But man, this bass has James Jamerson vibe!

That was what I was hoping for! Just had a spin through of 'What's Going On', and it nails it.

Is it called sunburst because it looks like a star in space with black all around it? I always called these tobacco bursts. My first American Precision was this color, and I still have it. One of the best colors to offset the aesthetic simplicity of the Precision.

A tobacco burst lacks the red/orange transition.

Yes, 3TSB (three tone sunburst) is amber, red/orange-red (varies) and tobacco.

Personally I’d give myself time to “accept” the pick guard … seems a shame to mess with such an iconic instrument. Congratulations, it’s da bomb! .

Beautiful bass! I don't care how out of fashion it becomes. I will always have a special place in my heart for sunburst of whichever variety.

I remember seeing John Paul Jones' 62 Jazz when my dad and I would watch that big Zep box set when I was first starting to play. I was playing a black Ibanez as was the style with 13 year olds in 2000. The burst vibe was in such contrast and I just knew I had to have one.

I now own a few burst basses. The 3 tone is my favorite but tobacco is cool too.

I dunno, if you wanted a period piece, well that pickguard was what you got during that period. Swapping it out , it will no longer be a period piece but just another modified bass., JMO

I just made the switch to the Avantguard pickguard. To my eyes, it is a lot more faithful to the tort that Fender fitted to basses in the 60s than the stuff that the CS puts out.

I love the sunburst. I think it is the best finish when done in nitro compared to solid plain colors like green, white, red, blue etc.
Boy, as it ages, it becomes more beautiful. This is not my bass by the way; I wish it was.

Tabacco burst is just Brown, no red in it. I live 2 tone "Brownbursts". My HCT. Shown here
