My wife bought me a Douglas Violin bass for my birthday. (Pics coming soon)
My first impressions is that it's very good for the money. The strings are garbage but they've been replaced with a set of LaBella flats. The tuners are OK at best. They feel cheap and don't hold tuning all that well. They are on the list to replace. The next issue is the tone knob. It seems to be more for show than anything. Completely rolling it off has a negligable effect on the tone. It's has to be replaced. Also, I plan on changing one of the volume knobs to a blend.
Next up is playablity. It's great. I've never owned a short-scale so it took a bit of getting used to. The neck is very comfortable. It's a bit more round than I expected. The finish on the neck isn't sticky at all. The string spacing is very narrow at both the neck and bridge.
To my ear, with the LaBella's it sound exactly what I think a violin bass should sound like. Very thumpy.
In short, it's what I expected from everything I've read on this forum. I decently well build instrument with marginal hardware; a good mod platform.
