NBD: Harley Benton B-650

It's new bass day for me! I purchased a Harley Benton B-650 from Thomman Music. I'm really impressed in the fast shipping as it took three days to get to the US from Germany.

My first impressions are that it is a great six-string bass for the $169 cost. I don't care for whatever strings they shipped on it. But I'll remedy that soon with a set of Ernie Ball strings. Out of the box, the intonation was spot on and even though I'll have to tweak it, the set up was very playable. The preamp is definitely a cheap one but I was able to dial in good tones on both the active and passive settings.

The first knob is a push/pull toggling the bass from active to passive. I like the battery compartment as the battery holder is a flip lid where you slide in the battery and go. No having to mess with wires or any of that sort of thing as I have to do on my Ibanez SR-405. Pickups sounded good. I always blend both when playing on basses with humbuckers. The weight of the B-650 is comparible to my Ibanez five-string. I haven't tried it with a strap yet as I'm still in the testing phases.

The bass itself came out of the box clean with no finish or quality issues at all. The only thing I don't like is that I haven't played a six-string bass in years so my muting skills are a bit rusty but constant practice will help remedy that. Is it as quality of a bass as my SR-405? Not quite. But the Harley Benton B-650 could easily go for a price higher than $169. In fact, I like it better than the Douglas WOB six-string bass I purchased from Rondo Music years ago at a cheaper price.

With small tweaks here and there, along with better quality strings, I could see myself gigging with the Harley Benton at some point in the future. For a budget six-string, this thing is an absolute steal. And it will not be my only Harley Benton bass. There will be more in the future.

The balls on this guy to show us a 6 string with a 5 in the background.

Jokes aside, congrats on the new bass, it's sick. Glad to hear about your experience from Thomman was good, there's a HB P bass there I was looking at getting but wasn't sure about what shipping would be like.

Ha! Ha! That's "Betsy" giving her new sister the once over. I sold my SR400 the other day because I just can't go back to four strings after becoming acclimated to the SR-405.

Thanks, man! Shipping costs greatly depend on where you live. For me, in central NC, it cost $89 but seeing how fast it was and how well DHL handled the box, it was worth it. The outer box had a few scratches and dings but that's to be expected in shipping. The inner box containing the bass was in perfect shape. Thomman packed it good. Or at least in my experience they did.

Im a bit north of you but I think shipping cost might be similar. DHL actually has a large hub near me now, so that’s good to hear they sent it via DHL.

Oh man, I think I might end up picking up that HB P bass now lol. Or maybe something slick like ol Betsy there in the background! Hahaha

I think you will enjoy the experience! My next purchase will be the Harley Benton B-35BK five-string acoustic bass for acoustical gigs. It gets good reviews online. Harley Benton electric basses in the five-string variety are also catching my eye.

Congrats! I have a pair of 550s, fretted and fretless, along with a handful of other HBs (yes, I am a fan).

I agree with your assessment, but my favorite feature is that both tone controls also work in passive mode. However, they are a little strange in that while the bass control is max at max clockwise rotation, it goes to its minimum at the middle of its rotation and the treble knob goes from zero at max counter-clockwise rotation to max at the mid rotation point. This is only in passive mode, in active mode they work exactly as you would expect.

Then again, they changed the bridge after I got mine, so YMMV. ;)

Unfortunately, I only a pic of the fretted one.

That is the general consensus of several who purchased it. The preamp and EQ on it looks better than several on named brands. Thomman won't have any in stock for a few weeks.
