NBD! Ibanez GSR100EX

How would those who’ve played one of these describe the tone? Can it pass as a p-bass in a mix?

I wouldn't say it sounds like a P. The single humbucker pickup... it's placement much closer to the bridge than a P... the physics are just different.

That said, only discriminating ears will pick it up. I played my GSR 105 in a number of public settings... people liked it... they like my P Bass as well.

Yeah I agree. It is kinda P bass-ish, but different. It's not passive stingray either. It's hard to explain.

Looking at it I was tempted to think how it would look if you stripped the finish down to bare wood, but turns out they already sell one that looks exactly liked that. Now I'm tempted. Kinda has a Joe Dart vibe.

Yeah those look cool too! I would say go for it. For $200 it's a steal! Everything feels nice on the bass. I would suggest buying a set of Gotoh GB707 tuners. They are a drop in fit with no drilling. They are a great improvement over the stock tuners. The stock tuners are not bad and hold tune, but the Gotoh's feel more premium.

I had a similar reaction with the buzz over the $400 Joe Dart basses now landing.

But I would not strip the GSR...the mahogany looks great as is with just the oil finish

This GSR is a great looking bass and similarly simple.

I may have to go and play a GSR again. I love Ibanez, but my only issue is that they seem to use the exact same neck profile across all of their ranges.
I have a Talman bass that I like, but the wide/flat profile isn't as comfortable as say an affordable Squier bass. Not to me at least.
The GSR range has a different neck profile than the lower level SRs (SR300e, SR370e, SR400e ect...). They feel chunkier, almost P-bass like. TBH I like the neck of the GSR better than the lower level spaghetti necks on the SR300s. The SR500s have a little thicker neck than the SR300s, but not like the GSRs.

Well after my first rehearsal with the GSR100EX, I'm blown away. The tone was more stingray-ish than I expected. It sounded great through our PA speaker. I used my SE DM3 DI going into a Behringer Xenyx QX1222USB mixer. I used no amp and the tone was amazing. It was very punchy and cut through the mix nicely. I'm in love!

I had my first gig with the bass on Friday. The bass did fabulous! It sounded great and cut through the mix nicely. The playability of the bass is great and plays better than basses that I've owned that were 3-4 times the price. The sound guy brought his bass rig for me to play through. Its a small rig!
