NBD: Ibanez SR Mezzo 32" scale - review

This thread seems to be the most popular one for the Mezzo, so I'll drop this info here:

One Greek site is showing a 5-string Mezzo, the SRMD205 in two colors:

Interesting. They seemed to have jumped the gun and put Ibanez's unannounced 2020 models online, including SRX basses with MM pickups, ICB "Iceman" basses, EHB headless basses, and an EDB Ergodyne bass. Some are even in stock.

Here's how the Mezzo compares to the 33-inch BTB33 Volo. (The BTB845V is the new version of the BTB33 and is the same size.)

I sold my SRMD200 because it felt too narrow at the nut (38mm), which divided by 4 is 9.5mm between strings.
The SRMD205 is 45mm wide at the nut, which divided by 5 is 9mm between strings.
Hence I will have to order one with the possibility of returning it.
If I do like the feel of the neck, I will probably keep it with the intention of swapping in new pickups and electronics.

You've made two errors in your math. First, you didn't account for the "margin" of nut on either side of the outermost strings. Second, you have to divide by n-1, not n (where n is the number of strings) to get the spacing. Now, if the margin happens to equal half of the string spacing, your math will work out, but there's no guarantee that margin = spacing/2.

As the owner of both 4- and 5-string SRs, which have 38- and 45-mm nut widths, I can tell you the strings feel much closer together at the nut on the 5.

I accept your correction but that's not encouraging for me. I was hoping for maybe a 50mm nut.
