NBD: Kiesel Vader 5 Short scale 30"

@eude
Thank you. When I got it I put Daddario nickel wound 120 90 70 50 40.
But it was only a 4 string Medium set that I had and added the G.
I’m going to string with my normal Dunlop superbright 120-40 next set or maybe a Kalium set.
Nice one mate.
I've been getting custom wound sets, tweaked for the shorter scale length, as one of my 31.5" 6ers has a head, so getting a fully wound string round the tuning peg wouldn't be fun. On one of my headless basses though, again 31.5" 6er, I recently popped some off the shelf SIT strings on and they're great, and to be honest just as good really. I'll still be buying Netwones as I used them before I went short(er) anyway, but it's nice to know that if for any reason I can't get hold of them I can get by with regular strings :)

I'd urge you to try Newtones, but with them being made here in the UK they'd probably be pretty pricey to buy over in the US, but I've heard great things about Kalium too. The beauty of the headless strings is you can use anything really, within reason, and just chop off the excess.

Just a side note, I've found that the B works even better with a taperwound string.

Cheers,
Eude

I will have to look into it. But might be pricey shipping like you said. My tech friend swears by Kalium. I will see. The dunlop super bright and Ernie ball regular slinky have been my usual for soo long.

Luckily I had this set of Daddarios I bought for a 4 string I tune to drop B
so theyll work for now. I have 2 sets of dunlops coming today. So maybe next week or 2 I will throw them on.

May as well try what you know first dude, most strings are SO much cheaper in the US compared to the UK so it won't break the bank like it would here ;)

I really dig the way these look, except that headless necks always throw me off - I wonder if Kiesel would ever think about making just a little vestigial head there - something to stop one's hand, maybe even to hang it by. Seems great though.

Thanks for the sound clips. Great job.

I'm thinking about a short scale, six string for chordal work. I want a tight low and articulate. The low end in your clips sounded huge.
@LeonD Listening to it on 8" Mackie studio monitors, it sounds huge. plenty of tight low end. Through my GK MB800 and Uber 212 it sounds awesome.
I think with a set of steel stings, that extra tension, would tighten it up more. I was unsure on 30. But I dig it so far.

So after spending some more time with this bass, ive come to the conclusion that.........................I really enjoy playing this bass. Compared the the Vader 6 (34") I just got, this 5 is a breeze to play. I strung with Dunlop super bright 120-40.
My wrist already doesnt like the VB6.

Yup, I feel the same since going to 31.5". Full size basses seem huge now! Hell, I've got a 30.5" 4 string too, and jamming that for a while then going back to my 31.5" 6ers is noticeable!

Reckon you'll sell the VB6 and get a 30" version? Do they do a 30" version of the Zeus?

Eude

@eude Nah I think my 6 string days are numbered. its for sale in my reverb store. But its a cool bass and I will be happy keeping it. Should it not sell. Although I am gonna string it with something lighter if I do.
I still use my multi scale vanquish 4 for the current project. its very comfy to play. 35.5 -34. for lately at home, I have been grabbing the 30" vader. Its very fun and comfy playing it. My dilemma is deciding which to take to practice tonight.

I asked the question to their customer service a few weeks ago, was told they do a 30" Vader so I take this as a no.

@Hasdrubal
There is a satin black 30" VB6 on reverb for 1299 currently.
if you were looking for a 30" 6.
i really dig this VB5! the PH pickup combo is awesome.
Yes, I've seen it too! I've resumed playing for a few months now, I don't feel ready for a 6-strings (and the Warwick 5-string necks I used to play seem huge to me now), my SUB Ray4 is keeping me busy enough for the moment :)
Good to know about the PH pickup, do you feel it's a better combinatoin than dual humbuckers or dual single coils?

I cant comment on the SC pickups. But compared to the HH vs PH. I find on center detent (most of my playing), they are comparable when pan to the neck is where I hear the main difference. The P on this one sound great soloed in both active and passive modes. So it kinda adds to the versatility of it. The HH combo is great though.
Im curious as to how the SC pickups sound. I may order a set for my ZMB5 thats on order.
