You probably don't need to spend that kind of money. I've gotten good results using socks, underpants and foam from an old mattress

I'll make sure I bring a few spare clean pairs for you if I ever visit NZ on tour! They're obviously in short supply 
Might be related to the string popping out of the nut - you want them wound downwards to give a downward break angle over the nut so that the strings naturally stay in place (for the tuners close to the nut, the string retainer should take care of it for the others).

I finished restringing it last night but my internet was down. It works much better, except now Im noticing some slight buzz only on the 11th frets of the A and D string. I thought Id ask before tweaking. And I was interested in the spb-1 pups because Ive already made a couple larger purchases recently, and they werent too expensive and people seemed to have positive opinions towards them. I just dont know for sure if theyll help deliver the sound Im after. (Ive also got 55$ of store credit I was hoping Id be able to put towards them)

+1 to flatwounds and bridge mute to achieve this sound. IMO swapping your pickups won't make that big of a difference in trying to achieve a "vintage old school R&B sound".

Ive been trying that, but maybe I have small hands. I cant seem to keep them all muted at once. He talks about how if you have foam or something attached, you may need to switch between multiple basses. I liked the one I mentioned earlier (not so much after seeing the price tag) because youre able to permanently mount it on, and it had a switch to raise and lower the parts that mute the string.
A nice piece of white foam like the kind I use wouldn't even be noticeable on that bass.
