NBD - NS Design Omni bass

Yesterday afternoon I received the used NS Design Omni bass I purchased and am spending some time noodling on it today. Thought I'd make a little video--not to showcase my sloppy playing, but to demonstrate the sound. So here's me playing whatever pops into my head. I did a little bowing to demonstrate the sound of that, but I don't know how to bow other than what I've learned from watching a few YouTube videos. I'm looking forward to developing that skill.

The Omni bass has a 34" scale neck, so for someone like me who never played much upright bass, it's great. I get the sound of the NS Design EUB, and the ability to bow, but the familiar spacing of an electric bass.

There aren't that many videos out there of people playing the Omni, and most of the ones that are out there are laden with effects. So I wanted to just give the straight sound (with a teeny bit of reverb) in case it's useful to anyone.

For some reason, I can’t get your video to play. I’ve been practicing reading more than any other kind of music lately and would love to hear how it sounds. I would like to have something similar that doesn’t require the cost or expense of a real upright bass.

I think I had the view permissions on my Facebook page set too restrictive. Try refreshing and I think it will work. Although I also can't get it to appear in Apple's Safari browser, if you're using that.

Thanks for this. I’ve been wondering if they can do the upright bass thing and to my ear it’s pretty good.
I’ve got plenty of work to do to get up to speed on a fretted bass, but would like to give one of these a spin someday.

No, hadn't heard about it, but thanks, will have to see if I can find a replay. Cello is interesting - the 5ths business isn't all that strange to me, given that I've been learning Stick (bass side is in 5ths). But my bowing still sucks..

I'm having enough challenges learning to bow with four strings. I can't imagine trying to do it with six!

Sounds great, and NS really knows how to make good instruments.

It didn't. I own an NS Design NXT upright, and the stand is for it, as is the bow. The Omni comes with a "boomerang strap system" but that doesn't really interest me, so I've ordered another tripod stand from NS Design for the Omni.

This all began when I decided to upgrade my NXT upright to a CRM upright (to get more tonal options from the magnetic pickups along with the bridge piezo). Used CRM uprights aren't all that easy to come by. I decided to take a bit of a chance (after doing as much research as I could) and purchase a used Omni. The NXT was the first upright I had ever owned, so I have no training on upright. I've loved it, despite the upright scale length being a challenge. The Omni has given me the tonal options I was seeking plus the familiarity of a 34" scale neck, so it's been a real win. I'm probably going to sell the NXT now. But I'll keep the bow.

I'm sure. I own an NS electric bass, and got it used, there wasn't very many as I imagine there isn't for most of their instruments. Congratulations, it really seems to nail that upright sound.

My college was fortunate to own one of these to play for Jazz ensemble. I agree, the Omni is just loaded with tonal options and felt so comfortable playing. I should lookout and get one myself instead of relying on the schools

I really want the 5 string WAV version of this. I'm also curious regarding the action. I really prefer bass guitar action over upright bass action. Looking at that saddle I'd be filing for hours to potentially get the action as low as I like it.

The saddle is adjustable via two screws accessed from the back side of the instrument. The adjustment will take 30 seconds, ± trial and error.

Thanks bud that's great information. The Omnibass looks preferable over the new Ibanez 5 string EUB because there's both magnetic and piezo as opposed to just piezo. But first my upright has to sell...

Did anyone compare the Omni Bass CRM with the full scale CRM? Is there much difference in sound? Does the full scale sound more full bodied because of the larger scale?
