I wanted to have Pyramid strings installed so I contacted Max and he was able to make a six string tapewound set for me. I have mentioned before that Max has ceased shipping to the USA because his shipping company, DHL, has stopped shipments to the USA probably because of the 'T' word. I've been wanting to make a big order of strings from him for several months, so it occurred to me that since he was willing to send the 6 sting tapewound set to Lignum in Croatia may he would be willing to take my big order and send everything over there too so that Lignum could ship all the strings with the new bass. Happily, Max agreed to do it and so now I have a good supply of strings for all my other uke basses. Yay!

I've suggested tapes to someone looking at a sub short scale bass. Do you know of any other string makers who will do custom sets line what you've gotten?
Several years ago when the only uke bass strings available were the silicone rubber ones like Road Toad Pahoehoes, I contacted D'Addario and La Bella to see if they would be able and willing to make 23" scale tapes for my Gold Tone solid body uke basses. D'Addario said they had no plans to do so, and the guy I spoke to at La Bella said they were 'unable to make the intonation work.' Ah well.

Fast forward to today and it appears that La Bella makes the rounds and flats for the Kala solid body uke basses that came out last year. But still no tapes. D'Addario has some bronze acoustic 23-25" scale strings available for the Taylor GS acoustic bass. But again, no tapes at the moment. There are other smaller brands that have 23" scale strings for their own instruments like Tiny Boy/Tiny Bass, but once again no tapes yet.

After having my Ken Bebensee Baruke custom uke bass made, I continued to reach out to string manufacturers to see if anyone would bite. Lo and behold Max at Pyramid was willing to give it a swing so I sent him the string length dimensions based on the Gold Tone (which the Baruke was based on) and everything worked out great. I have been using Pyramid strings for all my uke basses ever since and I would recommend them. But as I mentioned in the original post, Max hasn't been able to ship strings to the USA ever since the 'T' word came into effect. So if the person you are advising is in the USA it could be a problem.

I have a feeling that uke sized basses might gain popularity in the coming years and as a result the big string manufacturers will eventually give in and start expanding their uke bass string lines to match the rest of their standard scale length strings. But then again, I said this a few years ago.
