NBD: Oops… I did it again! [Olinto love]

Just last week, it was said that I have a pretty bad case of GAS (‘so bad it would make Dr. Cheese blush’ if I recall… lol). I giggled when I read that because I had just posted an NBD for my new Lull. And I knew what I had coming early this week. So here goes…

Last year, I was attending the Broadway play Waitress, when I heard a bass tone that I couldn’t get out of my head. I snapped a photo of the band and zoomed in to realize the bassist was playing an Olinto precision bass. Turns out, the player was NYC studio player, Lee Nadel. He was a beast and so was his bass.

I immediately contacted Olinto (a division of LaBella). I was told it would take a year, and I was just getting ready to place a deposit on a custom MTD. So I pumped the brakes and used a little self-control.

Fast forward to last week and I see this brand new Olinto bass listed right here in the TB classifieds. Self-control be dammed, I acted quickly and was able to procure this lightweight li’l dude.

It has the thin body (see the photo of it between my Lull and my Sadowsky), the Mas Hino pickup, the highly figured rosewood neck, and the trademark buffalo nickel string retainer. It’s sooooo nice. The action is ridiculously low and it plays like a dream. Best playing p I’ve ever owned… and that’s including the Nash, which is saying something.

I’m declaring it now, this is my last NBD of this year! The rack is full and the only bass I have left is that MTD I ordered, which should be here in early 2023. :thumbsup:

man, that's a good looking ax --- and i had no idea they were "thin," which is its own great idea! i hope you're getting those great tones --- congratulations on your new instrument! :thumbsup:

Dude, you're killin' it this year. Great color, that rosewood board is so nice. What is the neck profile like?
So this, that Lull, and I believe that 55-94. Aside from the MTD that's forthcoming, anything I missed?

Actually, the 55-94 didn’t make the cut. I sold it after only a few weeks (Loved the bass, but hated the preamp). It was replaced by the Lull. I had purchased a groovy Duesenberg bass that I really like, but contrary to what I originally hoped, I have zero practical applications for that bass. So it’s for sale on Reverb, now that I have this Olinto. Last month, I also picked up a passive Elrick 5-string that I've been eyeing for a long time. With the MTD coming, I may decide not to hold onto it. I actually put it on Reverb just to see what the interest is on a bass like that. Still, the passive electronics make it very different from anything I own... nice organic, natural tone. It has perfect neck/fretwork, and it's my only 'coffee-table' bass with exotic woods. So, I guess we'll see on that one. But yeah... killin' it this year. :thumbsup: (all things being equal, I've sold a lot this year too. 1 in / 1 out is my motto)

The neck profile of this Olinto is thin-C, but it has this really nice feeling flatness about it that is exactly what I like in a bass neck. I’ve called other basses “keepers” but this one definitely fits the bill. It really is the nicest P I’ve ever played.

Yeah, the thin body was something I had heard Scott Devine talk about on a video with his Olinto. But in person, it feels really nice... has a nice resonance. I'm sure that also helps with weight-reduction. This thing weighs in a little over 8lb. In-hand, it feels even lighter. And it sounds good.

Regarding my declaration of no more basses this year, I can't, for the life of me, think of anything else I want or need. I really do think I'm done til the MTD arrives. If I post another NBD before 12/31/22, you have my permission to make fun of me to your heart's content. :laugh::laugh::laugh:

I hate this place

I have been dying for a nice P Bass for the last few weeks and I finally cured the craving by telling myself that my current fretless with flats and a mute suits my bill just fine and that I should save up for my next bass (which I intend to be my first upright bass), and then you show up with this beauty and have me gassing again. I hate it here.

Nice bass (if it’s not implied)… you have no idea how jealous I am

Congrats. What color is it exactly? Lovely by the way. The white pickguard is spot on for this beauty.
