Double Bass NBD or 'Never Say Never' (With Video)

I added a DIY mute using a 9x12 sheet of 3/8 foam from Michaels to dampen the sustain a bit. I doubled it up on the bottom 3 strings.

Here is a little clip with the mute. I think I can remove some additional piezo 'quack' by cutting around 6oo hz.

That bass has the mist Brombergian sound imaginable, in the best possible way. Not surprising that the man himself uses that pickup on his touring bass, even if it means having the preamp attached to his tailpiece. I think it sounds great.

You lost me, Chris. What pickup?

When I saw him at ISB he was using a bass fitted with this pickup system and he sounded terrific live. The preamp that connected to the bridge elements was attached to his bass.

Thanks, Chris. Just to clarify, are you talking about the pickup in the BSX which is built into the bridge?

Yes! But it’s attached to a preamp housed in the body, apparently.

If I remember well, you had a BSX EUB not that long ago Rick, and sold it for some reason.
If was a 4 string though, again if I remember well.

You do remember well. It was, indeed, a 4-string. The only 5-string I've had was an Eminence I had before that.

BTW, Messina has the Allegro pattern for a bag. I bought both used several years ago. I’m interested in the hard shell case you have Rick. Who makes it?

outside dimensions of case are 61 x 11.5 x 20.5

The broken off wheel shows why you need a really stury case.

I had a brainstorm for a new trio. I'll be moving to Asheville, NC this fall (to at least spend winters there) and I'd like to put a new group together there.

I'm thinking Guitar, Upright (me), and either Violin or Clarinet (I'm leaning toward clarinet.

I had the idea of changing my new BSX Fiver to a high C string. That way I can play harmony parts with the violin or clarinet and be more in the cello range (without getting too high up in the dreaded thumb position.

I have a high C arriving in a couple of days and looking forward to trying this. Listening to the clip I did in the first post convinced me that this little bass has a really sweet singing arco sound. I hope I can find a way to put that to good use.

We will soon see.
