I recently picked up bass again, very recently. Ordered a short scale Kramer Duke as my Ibanez SR800le was hurting my hand so I figured short scale would be best as my son's short scale Squier Jaguar felt good.
Anyways I say all that to say this. My wife got wind that I was getting back into bass and bought me a new bass. She actually took me to GC for Fathers Day to get a new bass. I wanted to get a short scale, a Gretsch Streamliner I think it's called. Liked it, didn't love it.
That was what they had in short scale. Tried a couple Squier Jazz basses and they were comfortable enough but again liked them but didn't love em. I was trying to keep it under 500 as she gets sticker shock much above that and I didn't wanna take advantage of the situation too much.
Anyways she points out this orange Sterling at 299.00. Says she likes the orange and it's definitely cool looking. I pick it up and I'm immediately surprised. I kinda expected it to feel cheap and it doesn't, actually feels real good especially for 299. Good frets, solid feeling tuners, pots feel super smooth, bridge feels solid and the whole package has a flawless finish and it's passive (a plus to me). Still sounds enough like a Stingray to me. It's called a Sterling by Musicman Stingray Ray 2 and is apparently their cheapest Stingray.
This thing is unbelievable at 299! I've spent way more for no better quality.
The other thing is I thought it was short scale, especially sitting very comfortable. Haven't played it standing so I'll see how it feels standing later. But sitting it feels closer to my son's Jaguar than my Ibanez. Must be due to component location and body cuts, I don't know.
