I love Elrick basses. Rob Elrick is my favorite bass builder, period. I've owned quite a few of his basses over the years. In fact, I had him build me a 6-string a couple of years ago. But I was stupid and asked for 19mm string spacing. You could have landed an airplane on that neck... lol. So yeah, I didn't keep it.
So this time around, I gave it another try and pretty much nailed it. This is an Elrick evolution 6-string with 17mm string spacing and built on a 5-string body. The bass weighs in around 8lb and plays like a dream. The neck is thin and flat C with a setup that is classic Elrick... super low action with a nice spank. Also, adding jazz bass pickups works really, really well with the Bartolini preamp.
Oh... and Rob Elrick promised me this bass in 16 weeks. Almost exactly 16-weeks from the day that I picked out the wood, the bass is in my hands. No other builder I've worked with is that precise. Such an excellent experience.
It's funny... at the beginning of the build, Rob sent me photos of 5 body blanks to choose from. I couldn't decide so I let my kids choose. They looked at each one and the whole thing turned into a hilarious psychoanalysis, as we attempted to determine what we saw in each wood sample. This is the one that spoke to them, so it's what I went with. They flipped when they finally saw it. They have dubbed it 'our family bass' and forbidden me to ever sell it... lol. So yeah, this one is an actual keeper.
