Longish story with pics to follow!
I've been trying to sell my Warmoth Jazz bass lately, with very little luck. It was very much my own vision for a bass, so it wasn't super desirable to the rest of the world. I was unhappy with its sound, so I was trying to get cash to start saving for something else. Then, last night I got a bite on my CL ad, asking if I was willing to trade. I asked him what he had to trade and he says he's got an MIM Jazz bass, special edition something or other.
Now, I need another Jazz bass like I need a hole in my head, so I shot him down pretty quickly, but I asked him for some pics and the SN just in case. So he obliges, and the pics he sent seemed almost too perfect to be credible. Turns out, this Jazz he's trying to trade me is a one-piece natural swamp ash body, with black pickguard and matching black control plate, and a rosewood fretboard. For those of you who don't know, these are the exact cosmetic specs of my main player, my Warmoth Precision, seen here-

Like I said before, I didn't really want another Jazz, but sometimes the universe just bashes you in the face with such an obvious sign that you can't ignore it. I made a plan to meet him halfway between our homes and make the swap, but since his bass was MIM, I asked that he include the hard case and throw $100 in on top to sweeten the deal for me a bit.
This is my favorite part of the story, and what made it really worth it for me, so hopefully you're stuck with it up to here.
I drive up to our meeting spot, and the kid pulls up shortly after me, a 25 year old Mexican kid, cowboy boots, long hair, scraggly facial hair, all that. He's super excited to see my bass. I put my case up on his tailgate and open it up, and his face goes all golden and awestruck, like the briefcase from Pulp Fiction is looking up at him. The kid tells me this is his dream bass, that he's wanted one just like it for a while, and that he can't believe it was just a 30 minute drive away from him. He is totally down for the swap. So he gets the bass of his dreams, I get a Fender to match my Warmoth (plus some sweet sweet cash), and we both walk away getting our money's worth!
I got the MIM home, plugged it in, and BOOM! It's a player! The thing I didn't like about the one I traded away was that it didn't do the "Jazz bass thing" that I was looking for. It was loud, and kind of boomy, and never really lived up to what I expected from it. This MIM has that Flea-like, super scooped, hard edge I was looking for, and I think I'll hang onto it for a while. Plus, how can I separate these two?!
Anyways, I think I'll get some chrome knobs (maybe one chicken head for the tone) and a flat black guard instead of the glossy one, and some new strings, and I'll be set. Thanks for checking her out!
