The cover is part of the Ric styling, the 4001/4003 have a pickup cover over the bridge pickup. Some people remove them if they find it messes with their playing.

I measured the weight on an extremely accurate digital kitchen scale - it weighed 9lbs, 1oz.

I measured (w/digital caliper) the neck thickness of the Jackson vs. my Ibanez SRMS805 SR series 5-string - from the surface of the fretboard itself to the center of the back of the neck, they both measured 24mm thickness at the 12th fret.

String spacing is 16.5mm (for both).

So those measurements may not everyone's cup of tea, but anyone accustomed to an Ibanez & like the playability & feel of the neck should have no problems.

Thanks for the measurements.

Is the chrome cover over the bridge pickup wide enough to hide a humbucker ?
I estimate it to be around 5cm, is that correct ?

Not sure if it would hide a humbucker - I measure 104mm on the inside of the cover, and 137.5mm total width (edge-to-edge) from the mounting wings.

This particular cover might be made for this particular Jackson model - I don't think the mounting "wings" on a Fender jazz pickup cover are quite as large/wide.

Yes, they were very common on Fenders back in the early days of the company. They still are available & can be bought easily online, but a lot of players don't use them because it can get in the way of some playing styles (slapping, palm-muting), or blocks the hand position from playing over that certain area of the string.

Looks to me that you measured the length of the cover.
I was asking about the width along the strings.

I bought the orange neon 4 string version 18 months ago. It was light, easy to play. Well built. Thought it could cop a bit of a Ric-ish sound. I like the looks of the headstock. Has a Jazz feel to the neck to me. Super skinny necks and I don't get along well. I took it to practice a couple of times. Then did what I usually do. Went back to my Rics. At this point in my life I don't fight that anymore. Overall, nice basses for not a ridiculous price. Especially if you got a deal.

You're a braver man than I to rock that orange neon. :laugh:

But all joking aside - I've been playing P/J config basses for the past several years & kudos to Jackson for making what I honestly feel is one of the best sounding P/J's I've ever heard.

I bought it on Reverb brand new, but I did get a great price on it. It sounds fantastic - I finally pulled out some of my other basses & quickly realized that I can't see as much purpose for those any longer after hearing this Jackson.

It's also got the gears turning for owing a proper Ric some day - I've been a 5-string player forever but those original 5-string Rics are very expensive - plus I understand the string spacing is super tight.

But I know Ric has released a modern (albeit simple version) 5-string model in the last few years. I may see one in my future down the road a bit. But for the now, the Jackson has completely surprised me by just how much I like it. :thumbsup:
