I went online and saw a walnut CV P bass that I have always liked the look of. I am not a color of brown fan, if you know what I mean, but this bass has such a beautiful, classic look. Sweetwater does not have them in stock at this moment. They are on order. But I have a Squier CV P bass now that is my #1. The neck is exactly what I want. But you know how it is... I should play a bass before I purchase one. What to do? I must add, my wife wants to get this bass for me for Christmas, so I need to pull the trigger soon.

If you really like the stingray, you could just get a zero mod thumb rest which allows you to anchor closer to the neck. They attach using the screws in the pickguard so it's not permanent either.

I tried the "2 #1s" thing, but I just preferred one of em and the other never got played... but I guess if you do flats and rounds that might mix it up just enough for you. I agree those walnut basses look sweet!

PS there's an exact twin of your p bass on GC used right now! ;)

I played a CV 70s J (Indonesian) which was great! That's the only MII I tried.

And I wasn't trying to disparage the MII basses. I just thought "you're comparing these to possibly the best Squier series ever made..."

I've tried probably 2 Js, a P and the single coil P from the new series, and they were all great. (Esp the SCPB- wow!) Frankly I've liked all the MII Squiers I've owned/tried... not crazy about the hi gloss they put on the necks, but that's a cheap and easy fix.

Enjoy your gift, you've got a great wife there! Maybe she could talk to mine? :woot:

Thanks two fingers! Those pics really helped out with "visualizing" it. I'm such a Fender/Squier guy. Originally, I was in the hunt for something different from my beloved Fender basses. Then after trying other brands and exploring other options, I guess I wanted to go back to my comfort zone. But I am constantly second guessing this approach. That Zero Mod thumbrest may be the catalyst I needed to see to seriously reconsider... again!!! Is that the reason you got one? That pickup on the Ray 4 is just too far back for comfortability but it plays/sounds great! Like the neck too!

Glad to help.

Actually, we're the opposite in our approaches to plucking. I pluck a little closer to the bridge. And the P bass pickup wasn't far back enough for me. I didn't need much more. But the Zero Mod was just enough. (Plus it also crosses over and goes toward the neck if I want to pluck over there for rounder tones.) I got this model. And my thumb is usually right at the end closest to the bridge. Even that little bit makes all the difference in the world to me.

Here's one at a music store called Modern Music in Lisle, IL. a west suburb of Chicago

It's a 3 hour drive one way for you. Might be worth it to make a Saturday trip to check it out. I'd call first to make sure it's still there.

I see... Lol. Different strokes for different folks. Well, now I'm interested in the Sterling Stingray 24 (CA). Some ads have them as just the Sterling Stingray 24, and others have them as the Sterling Stingray 24CA. .. whatever that means. I wonder if there's a difference between the two or if just some places don't put the CA at the end. Anyhow, not sure how happy the wife will be with this decision if I go with it. The Ray24 is about $200 more than the standard Sterling Ray.

Day trips can be fun. Last one I made was in October. 5 hours round trip. I took an American made Peavey Foundation 2000 lined fretless with me, came home with a 2019 Fender Player Series Precision with a Fender Custom Shop '62 P already installed in it along with a gold anodized brushed aluminum pickguard, and a Hipshot Drop Tuner for the E string. Oh, and a couple of lottery tickets that I have still got to check. I could be rich and not even know it :roflmao:
