NBM - Ibanez SRSC805

Recently did some maintenance on my Ibanez SRSC805 - new D’Addario XL’s, truss rod adjustment, bridge & pickup adjustments - and thought I’d revisit this thread.

Haven't changed any of the electronics on the bass as I’ve always been happy with the sound. But I can’t help wondering what swapping out the preamp does. Is the stock preamp not as good quality as what you might find for an upgrade? What tonal changes are achieved when making this alteration?

Just curious as I’ve seen this mentioned in several previous posts.

Thanks & happy new year!

Hi. Question about strings. I recently got my hands on an SRSC805 IP01 from an estate sale. I have been playing for 30 years (semi-pro) and this is my first 5 string. I'm very impressed with it, and love the tone, although I find myself pushing towards rolling off the bridge pick up quite a bit in the balance.

Given that I don't know how old the strings are - and don't want too much tension on the neck, I think I should replace them. I've written Ibanez to try and find out what brand and line of string they use on these basses, but I haven't received a response. Does anyone know what strings these basses ship with? I realize that everyone will have strings they like, so I'm up for suggestions, but I really would prefer ones that keep as close as possible to the original tonal character of the bass.

The original owner had an incredible collection - about 30 basses, mostly 6 string. I realize that it's possible that the previous owner changed to a different string - but I'll never know what that was. So I figured I'd start as close to factory as I can (..and many people really like the tone so why not).

Thanks!

I own the 6 string version. The electronics sound good and all strings sound balanced with none down in volume. The pickups are marked Bartolini with no model number.

It seems a great value and it is too bad they are discontinued. The build quality of my bass is really good. It has nice woods and excellent workmanship.

Ibanez factory strings for the past few years have been D'Addario XL nickel roundwounds. If you want the exact gauges Ibanez uses you'll have to buy the 4 string EXL165 set and a separate .130 B string. If you're not so particular about the gauges, you can just get the EXL165-5 set, which has the same gauges as the factory strings for EADG but a .135 B string.

Thanks so much for the responses. I wanted to just mention that Ibanez finally wrote me back and said that the EXL-170-5 is the set which was used / shipped with this bass. Just passing on info for future readers. I realize that the gauge of a couple of strings is a little off the published bass specs, and the response from 'who' in Maryland was technically a better match to the instrument published specs if you also buy a single string, but it's interesting to note that maybe at some point Ibanez decided to use something more off the shelf.
