(New Bass Synth Day) No idea where to post this and or if it is appropriate, but I purchased a Roland tb-3 black Friday, and told my wife this is will be all I get for Christmas and had her wrap it up. She had a lot of other gifts to get so it worked out well from her perspective.

I have been curios about the synth stuff and this seemed like as good a starting point as anything. I have started to learn step programming. I recently joined a cover band and there are a couple of songs that I could probably use this for live. Need to figure out triggering, and what not. It is a fun toy, and I hope to be able to add it to my toolkit.

I don't think a bass guitarist necessarily has to discriminate against other forms of low-note making devices.
I personallly use bass guitar, upright bass, synth/keyboard bass, midi bass, bass pedals, and occasionally a Korg Electribe
"groove box".

So many flavors to choose from!

If I could afford an upright I would have one. I played one in high school in orchestra and sometimes in jazz band and I loved it.

Do you mix and match for Live?

Well, typically live, I only use the upright for "acoustic" gigs, outdoor jams,etc.


I played electric for 20 years before I even tried to learn upright, but had the
same problem- couldn't afford one.
But then I found a Chinese Cremona bass at a flea market.
Brand new- $500. It was unplayable as set up from the factory,
but some filing, new strings, and a new adjustable bridge made it pretty decent.

I am stuck, I can't justify having an upright without being in a band that requires one, and I can't audition for a band that requires one without one.

I would have been in a rockabilly or psychobilly band years ago if I had one.

I jumped the gun- had no real need for one, but I found once I learned to play it, opportunities
to use it started appearing.
BTW- didn't mean to derail your post about the TB-3. How is that going? I messed with one
in Guitar center a while back, but didn't get to spend much time.

No worries. I like the tb-3. My goal is to get to know all the preset sounds and be able to get to the one I want. I have started to step program and have programmed lines from one song. My time is limited thougth. I joined a second band and have been learning 30 new songs. In addition I bought my daughters a Ableton Push, and have been playing with that a bit. The sounds you can get from the tb-3 are great, and I would like to incorporate it into the cover band. I am also researching using the bass as a trigger for the tb-3. not sure if this is possible. maybe a sonuus B2M or something like it.
