Washington plays Colorado. Time to see if either team is going to challenge like last year. Both have had soft schedules. If anything Washington's was probably softer. Over in the land of real college football, the Ivies start playing each other. Some of them, anyway. Dartmouth plays Holy Cross. Yale plays Cornell and Harvard plays Brown. No midterm exams yet, so there won't be any inexplicably weird goofs just yet.

Michigan opens as a 10 point favorite over Purdue.

I'm not buying it.

Scoring on only 10% of your redzone trips is appallingly bad. If the Wolverines think this is the same old same old that Purdue has been they will get clocked. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Boilermakers climb up early forcing Michigan to claw its way back to a slim victory. Call it 24 - 21.

I hope.

I'll be rooting for Purdue over that school up north. But then, that should be expected from a person who grew up fairly close to The Ohio State University.

Of course :)

The Crusaders invade Hanover Saturday. I hope the Big Green is ready. I sure wish I was in town for that game, it's a late start, 7:00PM.
Those crisp fall evening games in Hanover are something every college football fan should enjoy.
You can go up early, have dinner at Molly's, over to the Canoe Club for drinks (before the game after dinner, after the game, or both), then walk down to the game.
Oh how I miss that.

Florida is off to Lexington. I remember when this game was a gimme for the Gators, but those days are gone.

The Cougs are now 3-0, ranked #18, lead the PAC-12 North, and face Nevada this weekend after trouncing Oregon State 52-23.

I am confident that they will be 4-0 when they play USC two weeks from now!!

Watch GameDay and follow the Coug flags!!

If the Cougs and Huskies are both undefeated going into the Apple Cup, it would make for a near perfect season. We will have to disagree on what would make it a completely perfect season.

Go Cougs! up to a point...

Oklahoma State opens conference play with TCU at home. We'll see if Kenny Hill can play like he did last week and if the Horned Frogs' defense can stop the powerhouse offense of the Cowboys. Both are doubtful. The way OSU steamrolled Pitt last week, they look pretty solid all around. This Saturday will be a good test, but OSU has owned TCU since they joined the Big 12: 31-6, 49-29, 42-9, 24-10, 36-14.

I was glad to see my Trojans squeak by Texas (a win is a win), but I didn't like USC making such a big deal of playing Texas.

Yes, I'm fully (and painfully) aware of the 2005 NCG. But that was over 11 1/2 years ago; all the principles from both sides are long gone, and Texas is not a long-time USC rival, not to mention the fact that USC was #4 going into the game and Texas was unranked.

I had a bad feeling about the way SC was going into the game. I'm glad they got the win, but I don't feel like it exorcised any demons. I'm still waiting for a complete game from the men of Troy.

Looks like Jim McElwain has himself some problems at Florida. Some of those suspended players are about to be charged with felonies.
People were upset at the conduct of his players when Urban Meyer was in Gainesville, but I don't remember any of his guys getting in this deep while they were a Gator.

I decided to spend part of my Thursday evening with one of my favorite coaches, Charlie Strong.
He has his Bulls of South Florida out to a 4-0 start, including a huge win tonight over the team that kicked their butt last year and cost them a championship.
A nine game winning streak for USF, longest in school history (dating back to last season), and winning your conference play opener.
Nicely done Coach Strong.

Washington State plays Nevada this weekend. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the match-up (where the Cougs hold a big point spread advantage) is that Leach will be coaching opposite Hal Mumme's son at Nevada. Mumme was the gent that Mike Leach ganged up with to create the Air Raid offense, so now the Master faces the later generation in Matt Mumme.

My prediction: lots of passing, but more running by Wazzu than people expect.

Excellent article:

Meet the man who knows both WSU and Nevada’s offenses intimately: Air Raid architect Hal Mumme

"As coaches and playcallers, Leach and Matt Mumme are more similar than different, Hal Mumme says, but they each have their quirks and there are little nuances between their offenses."

Well, yeah. Anyone who follows Leach knows that he has more than a few quirks!

Ha! I remember Mumme from his head coaching stint at Kentucky. He did notch a few upsets during his tenure, but none against Florida. And he was eventually fired after racking up numerous NCAA violations.

Kentucky fans are saying this is the year they break the 30-year losing streak to UF. There's even talk of rushing the field. It's not out of the realm of possibility, but I'll believe it when I see it. Struggling against Eastern Kentucky, and beating a South Carolina team that got some preseason hype (but is still coached by Will Muschamp) doesn't make UK look that scary to me. Florida certainly has its issues, but the ending last week should be a confidence-builder for Felipe Franks. Gators by 3.

Oh my how I wish I was in Hanover Saturday night. What a game!! Dartmouth wins in overtime after a guy blocks the PAT on a last second Holy Cross TD to send the game to OT, then squashes the Holy Cross two point conversion to preserve the Big Green win, 27-26.
As for the Gators, McElwain is a mess on and off the field in Gainesville now.

It's a good week and bad week for the Cougs.

Cougs and USC are both 4-0 coming up to Friday night's game. That's good! (Even though the Cougs really haven't played a tough opponent yet.)

BUT - we're all waiting for GameDay to come to Pullman. This is the perfect match-up, but for the fact that it's a Friday! Dang!!!!!!

Even more frustrating, if the Cougs and Washington both win out, the Apple Cup is in Seattle this year - so again, no GameDay in Pullman. Maybe if we keep winning it will happen with one of the other games.....
