NCD: TC BC208 (pair)

I scored a good deal on a pair of these. This is a first impression, and I've not gigged them yet.

The logic is to have a more modular rig than using 15s which are a bit bulky. I don't need to be thunderously loud. With one 15, I can theoretically get to 121dB. Two BC208s have the same volume and generally the same footprint in the car and are rated to 116dB max each so assuming ratings are accurate (a big if!) then that's circa 119dB plus whatever bass coupling I might get. But the big advantage is that the top speaker, with both cabinets stacked, will be much closer to my ear without the need to use my tiltback stand which makes it hard to place an amp on top. For quieter gigs/stage monitor only I can take one.

In terms of carrying, the 1x15s are not that heavy (~30lbs) but they are large. The BC208s are an easier carry. In terms of construction, they could benefit from corner protection. Adding that and still allowing them to stack properly (the tops have recesses to fit the feet) might be tricky. It might require fitting slightly taller feet to make that possible. It might slightly spoil the look but would add to durability when trying to negotiate doors and so on.

Although there are no tweeters, which there are on the Tech 15s, for regular bass playing, I don't feel I am missing anything for regular bass playing. I haven't yet tried the ABG or other instruments I might play through it and it's possible that doing so may make me want to somehow add a tweeter (how?) or a 'tweeter box'. The rating is officially 70Hz to 4k Hz at -3dB, so hair higher extension than some tweeterless rigs. In terms of bottom end, it's definitely 'lean' with just one cab, but it fills out significantly with two in a vertical stack to the extent that it should be perfectly usable for FOH work for small gigs with no PA support with both. It's not going to be earth-shattering low end, though. I have old lead sled Warwick ProFets but also an Ashdown 300W EVO class-D head. I preferred the Warwicks to the Ashdown into the 1x15s, but it sounds great into the BC208s. The Warwicks aren't really suitable for sitting atop the BC208s as adding a ~30lb mass (amp plus rack bag) that is twice as wide as the cab and looks both silly and unstable.
