Neck Maintenance

depending on your finish i've been told that lemon oil mildly diluted with water (in very light doses) and buffed onto either a high polish or natural finish works well. however i would NOT advise it on nitrocellulose or oil finishes. it all depends on your instrument read your instruction manual. or contact your basses manufacturer online

I sanded down the neck of the one bass I have with the prototypical "dipped in plastic" poly finish (my Ibanez SR-1206 six-string) with 0000-grade steel wool in January of 2002 (taking care to tape off the pickups so particles could not entire and attach themselves to the magnets) and only now is the Heavy Gloss starting to return. Tape off the neckstock and neck/body joint if need be (if it's a neck/through, as mine is) and it'll come out especially clean. It can always be buffed-out so it's not a permanent change.

The rest of the collection has very light gloss finishes that simply needs to be wiped down every once-and-awhile, and cleaned along with the solid "Twice Yearly" cleaning and polishing job each gets.
