Need a band?

So i'm currently not in a band, and I'm having difficulties finding a new one/or creating a new one. Even though I enjoy most types of music and I am able to play most types well enough, the only bands I seem to be able to get involved with either A. play a genre I dont enjoy. B. Switch to a genre I don't enjoy. C. don't really care about my opinion on what types of music we play.
Has anybody else had this problem, or any advice on what I should do?

maybe you need to get out more and meet more musicians in your city, it always looks like there are'nt any guys who play your style and have the time etc but if you "socialize" more musically you will soon have a whole directory of musicians you can call for a jam or a gig at most times!

Yes, I have.
I was a metal head when I first got into covers. Hated most of them. But, that was what the market was paying, so if I wanted to be in a good band that paid me to play and got me to play out, I had to find something I liked about playing the songs I didn't like to hear. Eventually, I came to like playing them, even hearing some of them, and came to understand why they are on the standards scene.

Or, start your own group and be the opinion.

And network like crazy. Get out to gigs and talk to muso's between breaks. Check street press and online resources and contact people. Browse ads in music stores and call people.

It definitely helps to go out to venues to catch shows and to socialize with bands. Creating some simple business cards and telling other musicians, "hey, if you'd ever like to start an xyz band, or if you know anyone who might be interested in doing so, please give me a shout" can definitely help get the ball rolling more in your direction.

C is generally going to be common unless you're the band leader/founder or manage to establish yourself as a leading figure in the group somehow - booking gigs or something. As for A and B, if you're not finding other options for the time being, I'd think of it as paying your dues while you establish a reputation and network until you're ready to start your own group successfully.

I love original bands but they are allot of work and I'm just getting to tired to do them. I also like Roots and Americana music but its not really easy to find or marketable so I play country/oldies covers. It's easy to book and the music is close to me enough. I would not choose to play music I dont like.

Hi Bully,

It's a tough call, as you know I play in a blues /rock very 70ish cover band. It's not really my genre but I can't say I don't like it. It has given me the opportunity I was looking for, steady/consistent paying gigs.

I really like strong originals pop rock, but have found in my area those bands don't gig much and for some reason these bands always have a BL that's a strong song writer and performer but no other band skills after that. Plus I'm getting a little too old to pull off the "Pop Rock" thing.:)
