Need a bass for aggresive style!

To me it sounds like you're pulling down the string instead of plucking it with your fingers. That's why you get the string-against-pickup-noises/crackles. If you pluck it (like an upstroke with a pick) you should be fine. It is possible to play aggressively with plucking the strings, I do that myself

As for the p-bass, it just sounds good when plucked hard, especially if you're going straight into an all-tube amp. It's a quite simple instrument:

Plug cable in, turn up the volume/tone, plug into amp and hammer off!

I never liked the MM sound. The P fits any situation and can be downright mean and authoritative. I've had dozens of basses, many high end, active, whatever. None have put out the full grinding tone that justs perfectly in a mix than a good Precision. IMO of course.

As for the "adjusting the technique", I do kind of push the string down into the pickup a bit more than i should sometimes...but I like the sound it gives me (when its not bashing the pickups of course...).

While digging in that hard is one way, lighten your touch, and raise the pickup. That'll do just as much, if not more, for an aggressive tone than slamming the strings.

Trust me. I've been there. I've broken more B and E strings (non-tapered, no less) than most people. And not due to, like, saddle burrs or a weak brand of string. I've really hammered on my strings.

Lightening my touch and raising the pickup did wonders for my sound. Plus, with less physical force exerted, my hands and fingers could last longer.

i'd vote for warwick, especially a thumb- you could play it with you elbow and it would still sound mean!!

Hey all,

I tend to get a lot of popping and cracking from my current bass. I guess this is from the pickups, from me pushing the string into the pickup pole. I just want a bass that sounds great when playing crazily.

What kind of bass would you guys recommend for aggressive play?? Thanks for the input.

hehe, I just picture you in a mosh pit wearing the bass ;p
