Need a little help/advice with my plan

So I have a passive fender am. std jazz bass and my knowledge of audio gear is very limited.

I want to practise at home on headphones. I know there are several headphone amps that will do the trick but thats too limited for me.

I want the following:
Plugin in my bass guitar to some device I haven't figured out yet without the need of my bass combo. And being able to mix in some music with plugging in an mp3 player or laptop into the same device.

I've found out the following:

I can go for the following:
1. Bass guitar -> DI -> Mixer -> Headphones
2. Bass Guitar -> Mixer with Hi-Z input (Mackie 402vlz4)) -> Headphones

Questions:
1. Are there more options? I've seen videos of passive basses plugged in to a hi-z input of a compressor or something?
2. Will a Hi-Z input of the Mackie 402vlz4 be enough? Won't I get a weak signal from a passive electric bass?
3. I dont understand how my bass guitar can produce sound without the need for an amp in situations 1 and 2, can someone explain?

I hope someone can help me out with these questions.

But if you have an amp already and aren't looking for a practice amp that can do what you ask, I'd go for situation 1 above, but instead of a plain old DI, get one that's also a bass preamp so you get some nice tone. such as MXR M81 Bass Preamp Pedal | Sweetwater.com For a mixer, you really don't need anything special... Behringer v-amp - looks like they've been going for under $30 on the bay. You can plug in your bass and an mp3 player into it and listen thru headphones and it has amp models and fx too.

the Vox isn't the same - no amp models and no fx, but it is much smaller
