Need advice and input!

Hey guys, I've been very troubled lately and I'm trying to get as much advice and input as I can from various people and I thought - "Hey! Why not Talkbass?" So here I amm.

Alright, I've graduated from secondary school (I believe it is the equivalent of high school in the U.S) and I now have a confirmed slot to study for a Diploma in Interactive and Digital Media. However, I've also been thinking to audition for a Diploma in Music at a local arts college (LASALLE College Of The Arts).

BUT. The main reason that I've been troubled is because I know for sure that I will most definitely enjoy the whole schooling process in LASALLE, I have no idea of what's to follow after that (I'm from Singapore, btw).
Basically, I'm worried about my future income. I know that it is extremely tough and challenging to manage a living as a professional musician and it IS hard.

Should I pursue passion and just audition for the Diploma in Music or should I go for something more 'practical' (which in this case would be the Diploma in Interactive and Digital Media) and leave music as a 'side' project kinda thing?

Lemme know your advice and thoughts on this, I need as much help as I can.

Thanks a lot guys.

Ian.

I'd evaluate how into live performance you are and how willing to sacrifice the little luxuries you may (or may not) be accustomed to. If you're ok with living on the bare minimum for years while you build a career as a full time musician than go all in. Otherwise go Digital Media while you build a career in performance and know you have something to fall back on and pay your bills in the mean time. The Digital Media Degree will also help you network. It's easier to get gigs when you're already hob-knobbing with the right people (those in the industry that actually make money, the producers and engineers).
