I was messing around in Guitar Center over the weekend, and I decided that while I really like the tone of my Sterling, I need something to complement it. I need something with a lot of low end, and not too modern of a sound. In messing around with a lot of basses, I think I'll be happy with most anything that is solid, Fender based (as opposed to warwick, ibanez, etc), with a neck pickup and an active preamp. I thought the Fender Marcus Miller was ok in passive, but I thought it was awesome for fingerstyle in active. That tone right there is basically what I'm going after. But I don't dig the looks of the Marcus Miller, and I'm not looking to spend that much.

I played a Schecter C-4 XXX, and I thought it was really good. The neck had a great feel to it, and I like the tone a lot. I played a new G&L L-2000 a few months back at Rudys, and thought it was brilliant. And I'm somewhat familiar with SX basses, I currently have a fretless.

So the 3 options that I'm looking at are, get the Schecter, try to find a used L-2000 in good condition, or get an SX J or PJ, and mod it. Which one do you think I should go with, or is there something else I should consider?

I dig the tone of the G&L A LOT. I have a Tribute L-2500 and the thing sounds incredible. It is certainly the biggest, deepest sounding bass I've personally tried with lots of presence, punch and growl. I want to trade out my Tribute to get a US made G&L at some point as they have a lot higher standard in terms of fit\finish and options. I think it would be a great compliment to the Sterling tone.

The only downside to the G&L is that it just might replace your Sterling as your main bass. :D Try to find one with a #6 or #8 neck. Those are the "Jazz sized" necks available for the L-2000 and will feel very close to the profile of your Sterling's neck.

I have an older G&L L-2000 that is my main back-up bass. IMO The only think I would watch out for on an L-2000 are really hot E and A strings. I experimented with pick-up height, eq settings and string weights and could never get an even volume across all 4 strings. The E and A are great (fat, punchy, good growl), however the D and G seem really thin in comparison. The only thing that seems to work is to adjust my playing... Don't get me wrong, my G&L is an incredibly playable instrument...and among the options presented I will select it as the best of the bunch.

Although I can't/don't disagree with anything the G&L supporters are saying, I did vote for the Schector. I compliment my Warwick Fretless with the Schector Studio 5 though. The range of sound from this Schector really sold me on it, and I've not been let down yet.

BTW, I just complimented both of these with a Takamine Acoustic G Series yesterday... fun! :hyper:

Dude,

Get the Schecter.

They are great basses for the money and will last you a long time. A very long time. AND they have great features! Stuff that most bassists want.

All they lack is any sort of relationship to Leo Fender (God bless him).

They are very playable instruments that sound good and PLAY great!!!.

GO FOR IT!!!

DO IT!!!!

You will not regret it.

Later on you may find yourself taking a different journey involving different basses...but that is o.k. It is the way things are. What you get from these will be a part of you for life. And that,m my love, is a very, very great thing.

God BLESS.

Joe.

I have many great basses, but by far, my most versatile best feeling and most played bass is the G&L L2000 that I've owned since 1986. I've done everything with that bass, from master sessions to bar gigs, and all the in betweens. Find a good one, and you won't be sorry, but you will smile a lot.
