Need good CD to MP3 software.

Here's the Situation:

I have a creative zen v plus mp3 player. The player itself is good but the software that came with it is crap. It will only do wav and if you want to rip your music in an mp3 format you have to pay extra for that service so I say bollocks to that. So what I need now is a good downloadable program for ripping CD audio at mp3 or better quality, enables me to move it then to my player, and a library that doesn't screw with my music after I put it on the player.

Any help is appreciated.

Best I know of is LAME, you'll need the tools to build it. Could be their are binaries out there, I haven't looked.

+1 Windows Media Player. You have to go into options and change your rip from wav to mp3 but it does a good job, free.

I've never heard of the others, But I'll give Windows Media Player. I was thinking about using the Apple software that comes with the ipods.

Use windows media player.

I got my missus the 4Gb V+ for christmas, and it'll just sync with the music on the computer

i like winamp for pretty much everything. it's a free download. i use it to play music and video, and you can export anything you want to mp3 or take an mp3 and turn into a WAV.

i've been using it since 98.

For best quality, use EAC (ripper) and LAME (mp3 encoder). Both are free. Everything else is a toy.

Are you sure you checked the settings on the Creative software that came with your Zen? I've used many Creative products over the years and unless they are doing something different, you allways had the ability to rip MP3's.

+1 on using LAME if you're looking for another decoder/ripper. Google Cdex and download it. Cdex uses a LAME decoder and it's one of the best open source rippers out there. It's free.

For managing your media I suggest Media Monkey. The basic package is free.

Yea trust me I looked it inside and out and never found anything above wav format. I went on the website and lo and behold I found that I have to pay for the ability to rip to mp3.

So right now my best options are Windows Media Player, and winamp. I don't particularly wish to deal with the other suggestions as I am not too computer savvy.

In that case, why even ask? "Please help me, but I refuse to learn anything." Nice.

The EAC/LAME combo is extremely easy to use. There's a "wizard" and everything to help you set it up.

Sorry if I came across as a little snooty. Did not mean too. I am just kinda annoyed that I paid money for a product and then the music sounds like utter garbage unless I pay them even more money. It's like buying a car and then finding out you need to take it to a mechanic in order to drive it above 30 mph.

Again I apologize for that earlier comment. I'll give it a shot if Windows Media Player doesn't work out. You've all been very helpful.

Audiograbber and Lame

Audiograbber can rip MP3 itself, but the bitrate is very limited... you have to download the lame binaries (links are provided from their website) and config Audiograbber to use the external codec

the above is what I use at work on windows...

at home on Linux I use the built-in ripper in Konqueror
