Need help recording via USB

I have a Tascam US-100 USB recording interface. Also have a Markbass CMD 121P combo with an XLR Line out.

First off - I admit to having no clue how to record. I went to the store and bought an XLR to 1/4" cable, plugged my bass into my amp, ran the cable from the XLR line out on the amp to input of the US-100 and started to monitor the channel in Cubase.

REALLY bad hiss - I can hear the bass, but just barely. The hiss doesn't seem to be caused by environmental factors. If I run the bass straight into the US-100, I can record but of course it doesn't sound nearly as good as the Markbass does.

What am I doing wrong here? Am I totally off on using the XLR out to record?

You should have gotten a mic cable (XLR to XLR), and plugged into the mic input. The hiss you're hearing is a natural result of unbalancing a balanced signal. Don't do that.

Nope - it only monitors 1 input channel at a time.

Here's a quick 25-sec recording I made. I had to put the input level very low in Audacity, record and amplify - there still hiss but it's much better.

I'd like to think it can get better than this - but again I have no experience with recording so maybe for cheap usb/pc this is as good as it gets.

at 20 secs cat jumps off the desk and tail hits the neck lol! stupid cat!

Bass: Epiphone Viola beatle bass, w/ D'Addario Chromes
amp: Markbass CMD 121P
