Need help selecting a bass

So I'm looking to finally step up from my ol' Squier affinity p-bass and get something alittle better. I'm not even sure where to start. I don't have much money to spend, maybe about $400. What are some basses I should look at for this price range? I don't mind looking at used basses either.

I like to play mostly new wave stuff with some finger funk, so I'm looking for something that would fit in more with that and not anything metal

If you like the style/feel of the Fender design, check your local classifieds for used MIM Fenders. They usually go for around $200-300 in my neck of the woods... drop the rest on a nice set up pickups & new strings and you'll give the guys with American Standards a run for their money.

I would check out an Ibanez ATK200 also

+1 on a used MIM Fender, perhaps a Standard Jazz.
