Need help with Yamaha BBN4iii pickup ID and rewiring

Hi,
i have this bass and the specs states that it has 2 pieces of "double coil". Mine is fitted with Yamaha pickup covers. i'm confused with various info on these pickups, ie soapbars, humbuckers, etc. i intend to rewire both pickups in series for direct connection to just a volume pot of 250K for a darker, fatter sound.

i only see one connecting cable from each pickup. Looks like coaxial with an insulated core and a bare wire shield. Am i doing the right thing to connect the pickups in series by joining the shielding wire of the front pickup (i assume it's -ve) to the core wire of the rear pickup (i assume it's +ve), thus making these two a single pickup effectively? (i have info on the connection/soldering to the pot and jack at hand to complete the circuit.)

As mentioned, i read that these pickups are humbucking (not sure if this info is right or not). Will my method of connection negate the humbucking feature? Or is the pickup humbucking on it's own individually, therefore my method does not interfere?

It probably wouldn't be a good idea to wire single-conductor pickups in series.

The ground from each pickup not only caries the pickup's - connection, but may likely ground the pickup as well.

This means that when you wire the pickups in series, if the pickup cavities are shielded, or the pickups have a second path to ground, one pickup will short out leaving you only the signal of the other pickup.
