Need Pickup & Pre Recomendation

So I've had this old LTD B-155 for several years and I really need to replace the stock pups and, most likely, the pre; the bass sounds far too sterile for my taste (stock EMG pickups and a stock EMG pre). The bass sounds okay for heavier music, but really loses its voice in the mix regardless of the song. This has become all too apparent after joining a new group and buying a new bass. I up for doing routing on the instrument as well so the pups don't have to be the same size as the current pickups. The group I'm playing in now is kind of a classic progressive sounding band, but we play/write all kinds of music. I want something that sounds organic and has a lot of punch, and if it helps I really like the sound of my G&L 2500 that I just picked up at a pawn shop. Feel free to ask me questions about my tastes before you give a recommend on the pups and pre.
